Just heard on Melbourne Centre that VA11 has been cleared to Mudgee - I thought that was strange, VA11 is MEL-LAX and usually leaves the Australian Coast in Southern NSW but today it is flying the MEL-BNE path.

What was the reason of the unusual path?

may seem strange Michael, but I have noticed that sometimes QF93 goes the same way (both A380 and B744). Must be weather/wind related.

Its now south-east of Armidale.

Flightplan off flightaware indicates they have been pretty much flying MEL-BNE route, breaking off to the pacific just before the gold coast.

There's your answer, some nice tailwinds there. QF93 operated its usual flightpath crossing over the coast at Wollongong.
