Three USAF C-17's flew into Richmond late this afternoon just a question is this abnormal that we get 3 in the space of a couple hours ?

It is unusual. I know USAF were assisting with transporting of logistics back from Exercise Red Flag in Alaska last week, but I would not expect 3 C17s!

From another forum, these 3 were in Perth and had come in from Diego Garcia from what I can gather.

We have had 6 USAF C-17's through Richmond this week, I logged a fairly new one on Monday (08-8192) and another arrived after I had left. One came through on Tuesday and we had the 3 yesterday.

It was McChord Jaryd (actualy wrote it down, don't usually bother). Unfortunately they all came and went at different times.

Thanks pete I've been trying to get a picture of one C-17 from each base, I noticed that a couple were in, in the space of an hour or so...

Two of the C-17's that were here on Thursday are back at Richmond.
08-8192 arrived 1pm and 07-7189 arrived a short time ago.

Just an update, both 08-8192 and 07-7189 left earlier, Now we have 00-0182 on descent so it may overnight. All 3 were in earlier this week.
00-0182 left just before 1am, I'm sure the locals wouldn't have been happy!

I heard another 1am departure last night - actually woken up by it, as it departed over Penrith. Figured it was from the RAAF base, just unsure as to what it was, probably another C-17.

Was on my way to church in St Clair yesterday evening about 5.55PM, and I caught sight of a low flying plane (mum spotted it first).

It was a bit dark so I could barely make out the silhouette of the plane, plus I was in the car at the time.

It had bright wingtip lights, and the red rotating beacons above and below the fuselage seem to flash very slowly (kind of like a long exposure time on a camera). It had very bright landing lights too.

Aircraft in question was tracking roughly south-east, and was fairly low. Webtrack doesn't show any such plane in the vicinity at the time. It looked to come from the general RAAF Richmond vicinity.

Therefore I assume it was one of the USAF C-17s?

Another three were sighted heading south from Richmond last Saturday night.

Departures, from memory, were approx 1730, 1930.. and around 2300.

Two more flew south over Mt Druitt around 6pm last night.

Of interest, one was reasonably low, but on par with previous ones, however the second one, a few minutes later, was much higher up for some reason.?.

One was a RAAF machine and other a USAF Jeff wether this makes a difference to the flight levels I dunno...

They were both USAF, I too watched the first one which flew towards Mt Druitt (00-0182) then did a tight right hand turn climbing at the same time, headed back towards Richmond and headed towards Wollongong at about FL160. I thought the second one (07-7189) would do the same but obviously had 'room' to fly direct south-east. My SBS tracked them both to FL320.
I noticed that on climb they have very bright red strobes until they reach a certain height then they revert to normal strength.

I saw an aircraft last night over my house around 11:03pm, the path it used indicated it was likely from Richmond, and nothing on any radar showed it. I think it may of been on it's way out, I assume it was a C-17 can anyone confirm?

Looks like they're back again today. Just happened to be out in the garden checking out an aircraft heading out of SYD when I noticed this C-17 (08-8192) approaching the house. Managed a few shots but it was at FL140 and climbing so only managed overhead shots. Not the best quality!

I saw a c-17 outside my school today, around 12:50pm
it was going out east the same way the QF and UA 747's and A380's go when heading out to the USA, were there any c-17's in YSSY today?
thanks

Speaking of RAAF base Richmond, found this on the RAAF facebook page.

Three F/A-18 Hornet pilots from RAAF Base Williamtown will practise diversion approaches to RAAF Base Richmond between 6:30pm and 8:30pm.
