Does anyone know why these flights diverted when all the others from LAX had no issues getting into Sydney? Was it a fuel issue?

UA839 (LAX-SYD) also diverted to BNE. And they would be biting well into reserves if they were instructed to hold around SYD when it was covered with fog, so it was in their best interests to divert to an enroute Australian port and continue when the fog lifted.

Fog due again tomorrow but was watching movements on PP this morning (early) I noticed most flights did normal approaches and didn't notice any significant holding. Wasn't watching all morning so don't know what happened later. Must depend on time etc as the fog out west didn't clear till after 11am.

Today I saw United's 747 Star alliance takeoff around 10am, it looked like it was going to YMML, anyone know why it was late?
thanks

What time did it arrive in SYD from BNE, I didn't see it.
do the ACARS show diversions?

UAL839 would've arrived in SYD around 0800-0830 - it left BNE at 0700, and it was operated by N178UA on the LAX-SYD leg. 121UA did SFO-SYD and would have arrived on-time, waited for delayed connecting pax on the diverted LAX flight, and then departed to MEL late as UAL839. It showed up on ACARS at 0954 signifying its pushback, initial taxi and subsequent departure to MEL.
Simple as that. And ACARS shows all aircraft that use that system, diversions don't single out any one aircraft from another...
