This is the report I received from NSW Police:
Emergency services are responding to reports of a plane crash on Sydney’s northern beaches this morning. About 10.15am today (Friday 2 September 2011), emergency services received reports of a light plane in trouble just off Curl Curl Beach. At this time there appears to have been two people on board the plane. A male has been able to swim to shore and he has been taken Royal North Shore being treated for suspected spinal injuries.

It is believed the other person on the plane has died. Police divers are en route as the joint emergency services operation continues. A rescue operation is underway and no further details are available at this time.

Very sad indeed. I got from another article that he did a 180 out of a headwind into a tailwind. Unfortunately this would of made things a lot worse

Very sad... Chilling to be able to hear his last words on liveatc. Can't believe how the media descended on the scene like flys...
