Australians will get a first-hand look at the Boeing 787 Dreamliner when Qantas and Boeing bring the revolutionary jet down under for a short promotional tour next month.

The Dreamliner will carry both Qantas and Jetstar livery, reflecting that both airlines will employ the 787 from early 2013 on international and domestic routes.

(See the breakdown of Qantas' plans for the Dreamliner in Qantas does the 787 shuffle.)

The 787 will visit both Sydney and Melbourne airports and it certain to be a show-stopper, even though it won't have the same interior layout as what we'll see on the QF or JQ models.

Qantas spokeswoman Olivia Wirth told The Australian aviation reporter Steve Creedy that the airline is looking to do "open days and that sort of thing so people can come and see it."

I hope ZA003 (with it's new paint job) is the frame coming over. It looks fantastic and I think will present a great image of the 787 to the general public.

The fact that the 787 is such a paradigm shift in the way Airliners are built, is a huge thing for commercial aviation, especially with Airlines around here being customers.

Max C
16th October 2011, 08:23 AM
Isn't the 787 coming over going to be painted in JQ/QF colours?

Wouldn't make sense to repaint an aircraft that's just been repainted?

Yep Anthony is correct.

Keep in mind that ZA003 isn't confirmed to be the one coming to Australia yet. IF it does turn out to be the aircraft I can see them putting "QANTAS" titles on the white part of the new livery.

I wonder if we will see big crowds for the 787 arrival around the airport like when Qantas' first A380 was delivered... :D

The nuances between what we call "colours", "livery", and "decals" is generally lost outside our eclectic group.

+1 for just having decals

It is visiting Auckland also, arriving on 12 November direct from Seattle.

I'm guessing it won't be in QF colours as NZ are hosting it here.

NZ media release

19 October 2011

Air New Zealand brings Dreamliner to New Zealand

New Zealanders will be among the first people in the Southern Hemisphere to see the new Boeing 787 aircraft when Air New Zealand brings it to Auckland for the first time from 12-14 November.

Air New Zealand will host the Boeing 787-8 test aircraft at its engineering base at Auckland International Airport for two days. Exact timings of the 787’s arrival on Saturday 12 November non-stop from Seattle will be confirmed in the coming weeks, but will be timed to give Aucklanders the best chance of seeing the aircraft as it flies into Auckland.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the 787 in our skies for the first time. This is an aircraft which has the exciting environmental advantage of using up to 20 percent less fuel while also being able to carry up to 50 percent more cargo than other jet aircraft of comparative size,” says Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Rob Fyfe.

Air New Zealand is the launch customer for the larger 787-9 variant, which will have a greater range capability and seating capacity than the 787-8.

“Once the 787-9 goes into service sometime in 2014 it will change how New Zealanders fly and how we bring the world to New Zealand. Its composite structure enables better cabin humidity and lower relative cabin altitude for a more comfortable flying experience,” Mr Fyfe said.

The aircraft on display in Auckland will be one of the first test aircraft produced by Boeing Commercial Airplanes and as such is fitted with test equipment.

Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager for the 787 program at Boeing Commercial Airplanes said, “We are thrilled to be able to bring this test plane down here for Air New Zealand. While the interior is filled with test equipment and therefore far from showroom standard, the exterior is not only aerodynamically efficient but extremely beautiful and people will be able to see just how different it looks.”

Branded the "Dreamliner" by Boeing, the structure of the 787 aircraft makes significant use of lightweight high-tech composite materials to deliver operating efficiencies and customer comfort, including higher humidity levels and a more comfortable, lower cabin altitude.

Don't know exactly Alexander, but I know that one of the gates (Nigel might be able to tell us) on the end of terminal 3 (QF domestic) were retrofited a while back to accommodate the 787. Now if they plan to test those bridges out while it's here you maybe able to get a shot from obs deck. so I hope this helps you out a bit...

I can't see all those photographers, etc being allowed to be that close and on the tarmac when the 787 comes to Sydney. Lucky buggers.

Jayden Laing

In photo number 13, how is the guy in the orange shirt allowed to be standing so close the engine whilst its still running?? Surely he is in the danger jetblast zone!!

Grahame Hutchison

Might be just an illusion from a long lens, and he is actually left and behind the intake somewhat (still seems close).

I can't see all those photographers, etc being allowed to be that close and on the tarmac when the 787 comes to Sydney. Lucky buggers.

There'll no doubt be a media contingent, and how close to the runways edge they'll get will be determined by operational conditions on the day.

I can't see all those photographers, etc being allowed to be that close and on the tarmac when the 787 comes to Sydney. Lucky buggers.

I suspect that the photographers in Auckland were actually further away from the engines than they appeared to be. However, if that's not the case, then someone should be sacked for exposing both people and the aircraft to an enormous amount of risk.

Hangar 416 is next to the domestic terminal but you won't be able to see inside the hangar from anywhere in T3, as the doors face away from the terminal.

From the Australian Business Traveller website :

That hanger is Hangar 416 at Qantas’ Sydney Jet Base, where the Dreamliner will have decals for the Qantas and Jetstar logos applied and be otherwise made ready for its Australian debut on Wednesday November 16th.

Days off for me at the moment, so I'm nowhere near the place. I'll be back on Thursday; I think that's the departure date? ..... just like the A380.

Remember Nigel how you chased up the black stuff checking for damage after the A380.

Exactly. There's not even a whimper these days when the newest dugong arrives.

Lovely shots Kurt, even with the dreaded heat haze. Now that you've covered nearly every angle there won't be much of a need for the next 39 posts. Haha

After a last minute email to my contact at Boeing, and a few emails back and forth to
Dreamliner Captain Mike Bryan in Auckland, we organised a tentative plan for an inspection
of ZA001 today. A big thank you to Boeing, and Mike in particular for going out of his way
to make sure today happened.

Once on board and in the left seat, Mike gave me the run through on the flight deck systems,
followed by a personal walk around the aircraft while discussing the various features and
innovations on the aircraft.

http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-007.jpg

The 787 uses a mouse to operate the various displays, the overhead fuse panel is gone, instead the fuses are shown on one of the
centre console displays, and can be operated electronically using the mouse. The cockpit windows are very large, particularly the side
ones, and all are fixed. Escape from the cockpit is via a roof hatch on the right side, using a device with a coil of wire that clips onto
the hatch and lowers you down safely to the ground. The HUD is a standard feature (either side at the top of the image) and just pulls
back an up out the way when not in use. Standard approaches and departures can be diaplayed on the HUD along with all the other
necessary instrument readings. Like the 777 there is an Electronic Flight Bag on either side of the cockpit, however this is an enhanced
version of the EFB. Radio frequencies can be keyed into the displays rather than turning knobs, and ground steering is via a traditional
tiller. Flight performance is superb, with Mike mentioning that they have had the aircraft down as slow as 78kts, not something you
want to do very often. The very back section of the centre console is only for testing and is not part of the production aircraft.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-002.jpg

http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-004.jpg

The Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engines are massive with chevrons to mix the hot and cold gases and reduce noise. The cowls also appear
to be made of carbon fibre. Qantas have ordered the GE engines.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-011.jpg

Rather than bleeding hot air from the engines to supply the cabin, the 787 has fuselage mounted intakes (bottom right) to supply cabin
air, and pressurises the cabin electrically. The panel in front of the intake lowers to prevent ingestion of foreign material whel landing
and taxiing.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-019.jpg

The wing on the Dreamliner is a beautiful piece of work, all the actuators for flaps and ailerons
etc. and very small compared to earlier aircraft, and the wing is one perfectly formed shape
right out to the raked wing tips (and they are made in Japan). They are also looking at the
use of more composite in the wings structure, in particular some of the ribs, which will further
reduce the overall weight. Currently, 50% of the aircraft by weight is composite.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-040.jpg

The brakes are electrically operated rather than hydraulic, and the actuators can automatically
compensate for an individual failure. Mike said that when he took the 787 into Farnborough's
short runway, some firm braking was required and the brake temperature reached 1200 degrees.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-065.jpg

As queried earlier in this thread, the red windows have sensors installed for test purposes.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-049.jpg

A lot of attention has been paid to the finish of all surfaces on the wing, and this shows how small some of the mounts and actuators
actually are.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-076.jpg

Again, the transition from tail to rudder is almost seemless, and ZA001 has a series of vortex
generators in a vertical line up the tail. This came out of flight testing and they are required
to disturb the air just a little as it passes over the tail. They have been playing around with
different combinations of the vortex generators to determine the best option.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-075.jpg

Grahame Hutchison
16th November 2011, 03:38 PM
Apart from a few seats up front, the aircraft is mainly filled with test equipment. You can actually see right through to the rear pressure
bulkhead, which is also composite and much flatter than normal. This allows more room at the rear for galleys or toilets etc.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-122.jpg

The overhead setup is quite purpose built, with large flat sections of sheeting bolted to the centre section. This is done so they can
locate special lighting directly overhead the flight data monitoring consoles.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-124.jpg

This is the join between the main fuselage section and the nose section. The light sections
are the external composite skin, which are overlaid with a double layer of fasteners.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-132.jpg

A series of water tanks in the cabin are used to vary the centre of gravity, and also load the aircraft weight wise.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-133.jpg

On static display was a window panel section so you could try out the dimming feature of the Dreamliner. The left side is fully clear
and right fully dim. It takes about one minute for the transition to complete, and at completely dim you can still just see through the
window. There are five small indicators on the left of the button to display the current setting, and you press the top of the button
to go to the clear setting, and bottom to go to the dim setting.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-136B.jpg

The Dreamliner production line does not really have a set rate at present, as they transition from testing to production. There are
apparently about 50 aircraft in various stages of construction and waiting on particular components. The crew on this "Down Under"
tour was around 30 in total, and the route home will be Melbourne, Honolulu then Seattle. They cannot go direct Melbourne - Seattle
as ZA001 has fuel limitations in the wing tanks.

Grahame Hutchison
16th November 2011, 04:02 PM
Also in the hanger with the Dreamliner was 737-800 VH-VZT which was only delivered a couple of weeks back and features the new
sky interior.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-094.jpg

Economy seating with seatback IFE.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-098.jpg

Business deep red/brown leather seating with a larger seatback IFE.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-099.jpg

The cockpit features an after fitted HUD (just visible in the top left corner), and not standard like the Dreamliner. Qantas have
apparently been fitting the HUD to their B737-800 aircraft over the past four years.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-146.jpg

And outside and just opposite was John Travolta's B707, just beautiful to have a walk around the aircraft, bring back memories of the
60's and a great First Class flight to New Zealand. I remember being in the cockpit and the navigator was taking a sextant reading
through a special port in the cockpit roof. We also passed a Pan Am B707 heading in the opposite direction, the closing speed was
massive, and I could easily read Pan Am on the fuselage.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/ZA001/D300-2011-11-16-147.jpg

John, I don't think you will see the B707 from either T1 or T2 because of the hangers opposite T2. From T2 it is parked to the right, and right around the corner to the left, nose hard into the old customs buildings. If you could see anything, it would only be from behind.

Can someone help with this conundrum..... Get a shot of 78 and 70 leave for Melbourne or drive to Canberra and get a shot of AF1 and AF2 and Delta 76 leave for Darwin ? What to do what to do!!!!!!

AF1, I'm sure the other two will be around a lot more than AF1 and co.

AF1 is always AF1

Will she be in Australia again anytime soon? Likely not!

Yes but you will not see the 787 again in OZ in Boeing livery!

Also to add to Brian's post the 787 will be leaving at a much friendlier time (heat haze) than the ones in Canberra.

The B787 departed off Rwy 16R at around 0830, rotating near the Rwy's intersection.

I've got to admit, even after all the hype, I was surprised at just how quiet it was on take-off.

B707 should depart to Melbourne tommorrow around 12pm.

The 707 will depart SYD at about 1200. But will return an hour later to SYD. It appears it will stay in SYD for the next couple of days. ie: Won't be going to MEL.

It will be arriving and departing from the GA area.

Missed the 787 due to waking up nice and early...not. However, I didn't mind, I was more concerned about the 707, I managed to get a video but it wasn't great as I forgot my tripod, and I tried shooting through the fence from the beach! Oh well, hopefully I'll get a better video when she's back, that sound and smoke was bloody amazing. :)

So, how about a street address - if there is nothing mysterious about it? ;)

Or are we intruding on "secret spotters business".

I'm afraid I can't provide you with a street address because I've not actually been there...yet. I only know it's 'thatta way' (points north from where I'm sitting), but I do hear the beers are ice cold and although I have been invited I'm yet to make an appearance (a bit hard without the street address!!!).;)

Not being a spotter myself, I can't vouch for any 'secret spotters business'. I think I'd be relying on people like you to tell me how that goes.:p Maybe when I leave here in 5 years I'll visit the odd spotting location, then we can talk spotting secrets.

For those interested in a bit more detail of the Dreamliner cockpit (enlarged quite a bit and the focus varies towards the top of the mail panel).

The bottom section of this panel is for the test aircraft only.

The first Boeing 787 to fly ZA001 is being flown to Palmdale,
California It will be pulled out of service and stored until
its final fate is determined.
The first 787 to fly back on December 15, 2009, ZA001
has served as the workhorse of the flight test fleet with
518 flights and more than 1,326 hours according to
Boeing (not including the current flight). The airplane
has been all around the world and just returned from
Australia last month
After arriving in Palmdale, ZA001 will have its Rolls Royce
engines removed and it will be placed in storage. Palmdale
is a home to a Boeing flight test facility. The desert climate
is ideal for long term aircraft storage ZA001 is expected to
eventually make its way to a museum. A likely final parking
spot is at the Museum of Flight at Boeing Field in Seattle
where Boeing’s flight test group is based and ZA001 spent
much of its life.

Yes agree it seems a bit early to retire the aircraft.

I think the prototype 747 was used as a test bed for many years.

I also thought the prototype 737 was used by NASA once Boeing had finished with it.
