Hi folks,
Just jumped on the site to check a flight and found a new webpage. All arrivals/departures pages seem to be streamlined - for international - the operating carrier logo is shown with all codeshares next to it on the one line compared to several lines previously..
Also features a flight radar, which tonight is not working... Probably due to the upgrade. Very much has the feel of the Melbourne airport website...
Check it out!

Noticed it last week, it's a nice format but the problem for me is that the small amount cargo flights they use to display no longer appear.
They also added a flight radar which is neat. I noticed they confused some DJ flights as DHL Air which is the closest thing you get to cargo flights on the new format. That may of been fixed by now though.

Yes it does not seen to show cargo flights any more, it says they're are just two Malaysian
flights tomorrow, lets hope they change that.

I've emailed a link to this page to the people responsible for the development of the site. They are looking at ways to tweak the site to make it even better, so keep checking back to see the changes!

Thanks Nigel!
I should make my comment more of a suggestion then so the developers consider my suggestion. They should include a cargo flight section with all the cargo flights if they are looking for an improvement over the old format. If that is not possible I'd like to see the old cargo flights start appearing back in it for Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Malaysia Airlines etc.
Besides that though, It is a nice new format and the website has had a pretty good overhaul.

Maybe one of the features of the Zurich website could be included? Type in "spotter" and the flights are listed with registrations.
Only wishful thinking...

Thanks for making the developers aware of these suggestions Nigel, personally I would love to see the arrival/departure gates listed for International flights, plenty of the Asian airport websites are terrific for this. Just a small thing granted but when flying in from Chch would be good to know in advance where we are docking. Cheers Mark

I've received an email on my days off advising that an aviation enthusiasts page will be set up on the new website, and they've asked for suggestions on what to include.
Possible features mentioned include spotting view points and best times, the cargo schedule, a link to ATC, aircraft types list and picture of the week.
Micheil, I have put forward your request for registrations being linked, and Mark I've forwarded yours on too.
Personally I think it's great that the airport is willing to accommodate more than just the corporate and travelling public.
So folks, here's your chance to suggest what you would like to see on such a page. I'll forward all suggestions on for consideration.

Excellent news Nigel! It is definately a great thing to see them going well and beyond their services to passengers to please the aviation enthusiasts and spotters aswell. It really encourages the spotters too.
I also received an email last week for my suggestion for cargo flights and it has been noted. :D

On the subject of help for us spotters. it would be great if Sydney airport re-started the tarmac tours.

Hi Micheil
Thanks for the "heads up" about Zurich airport. But where do I type "spotter" to get the rego details ?
And have you seen what Bristol airport in the UK displays at :
http://apron.bristolairport.com/apronStands/
Details of flight number, airline, aircraft type, rego and parking bay.
Cheers and good spotting

The tarmac tours were privately run. Maybe one day they'll run again.

A mobile version of the website would be nice, so that while you're out beside the runways you can access rego/times information.

Of course a mobile version would be nice for everyone, so when you're on the train or in the taxi you can easily look up times. No-one with a smart phone is going to pay $1.50 for the SMS service.

In response to the suggestions starting to flow from here and no doubt other sources, Sydney Airport have created an email address for you guys to float your ideas on what you'd like to see on a spotters/enthusiasts page. You can also submit images for the web page if you wish, and for those with copyright concerns, some early discussions regarding protecting published images have begun.
yssy.planespotter@syd.com.au
Obviously all the ideas can't be implemented all at once, but they're planning to make your ideas a reality. You guys, as the regular travelling, spotting enthusiasts know what information you want to see before and when you go to the airport, so here's your chance to let the airport know what would make your visits even better!

*BUMP*
Just an update to this thread, the spotters page is apparently about 99.9% ready for launch. I'll post here when it does go live if I'm at work , otherwise I'm sure one of you will see it first!
Also, Sydney Airport has launched it own free iPhone app recently, with up to date flight information and other terminal info.

Hopefully the last thing to do won't take too long, content is complete just isn't launched yet ;)

Sorry, I can't answer that one. I only found out about the iPhone app yesterday when I was with some people from the corporate section, and the Sydney Airport website only mentions iPhone.

Wow, great idea and looking forward to how this area of the site will develop!
Do you reckon they'd go for a 'Video of the Month' as well?
Would suggest adding Swamp Rd and the Boat Ramps along Foreshore Drive as Spotting Locations :)

Can I ask where the 16L mound is? Wasn't this levelled a few years back when the radar field shopping complex was in the pipeline?

There's still a small hill area there near the HIAL's, and occasionally I see people up there watching the 16L movements. It's basically straight across the road from Gate 15.

Hi all,
I am Marcus Braid, a journalist at the Daily Telegraph. We are looking at putting together a colour story about plane spotting for this weekend's paper. If there was anyone able or interested, we are looking at spending some time with plane spotters today (Thurs Jan 12). My number is 02 9288 1688 or 0406 961 886.
Regards, Marcus

can we please please have freighter flights listed back on the SYD airport website, if they were taken of to reduce confussion from the general public then surely they could have the word CARGO or something after the flight No?? as an agent using many airlines I use to rely on the old site so much! thanks in anticipation? ...

Julian C,
I have been asking for the freighter flights to come back for a long time, if there is more interest then just from us then they will definately take it into consideration.

Morning Tim,
Freight will not appear on the 'arrival/departures' under the traveller's section of the corporate website today or in the near future.
Any ad hoc or special livery that we are made aware of will be shared on the Aviation Community (http://www.sydneyairport.com.au/corporate/community-environment-and-planning/aviation-community.aspx) page.
Thanks.

Adding any Ad hocs that you're aware of is a great idea, at least we gained something good since the loss of the cargo flights!
