Morning all,
From the Cargolux website...
Cargolux announced today that the Company is introducing two new flights that are bridging continents faster than ever before.
Flight CV 8923 starting on 19 October 2011 is one of the Company’s longest routings with a total of 75 block hours and 10 sectors, combining Asia-Transpacific with USA-Australia-USA services.
CV 8923 is operated every Wednesday evening at 19:00 out of Luxembourg, with arrival in Hong Kong on the next day at 16:00. The flight then reaches New York the same day at 23:45 and Chicago on Friday at 03:00. The flight leaves the USA and continues to Sydney, reaching the Australian metropolis at 15:40 on Saturday afternoon before flying back to the USA, arriving in Los Angeles the same day at 14:30 and in Chicago at 22:25. The flight then returns to Luxembourg on Sunday at 14:15. This new connection is the first USA-Australia-USA service offered by Cargolux to its worldwide clients.

They cancelled the MEL service over a year ago now, I still think it would be cheaper to fly to MEL or BNE and then fly on to LAX.
Well at least CX Cargo will bring the 748 to SYD and MEL.

No 747-8's scheduled at this point, when more are delivered we will probably see one operate the flight.
Too bad the first flight can't be an aircraft in full livery.

Where does the flight stop over between Chicago and Sydney and does it operate non stop from Sydney to Los Angeles?
Stefan Perkas
21st October 2011, 08:36 PM
James,
There are no stops in either direction according their schedules. It will operate Chicago-Sydney Non stop, and SYD-LAX non stop.
I was just following what was on the press realease on the airlines website...

They are planning to use the 747-8 in the near future.

Morning all,
Looks like it is routing Chicago-Honolulu-Sydney... http://flightaware.com/live/flight/CLX659/history/20111022/0140Z/PHNL/YSSY
It hasn't landed in HNL yet, it is duer int there in around 1 and 3/4 hours. Flightaware is saying it is due into Sydney at 2150EDT. So you may see an early arrival into SYD tomorrow morning if it gets delayed in HNL>

It is showing in their schedules doing ORD-SYD. It is due to arrive into SYD at 1700 tomorrow afternoon.
However it will most probably go ORD-HNL-SYD. SO it may arrive the same time as last weeks flight at 2250.
Fligt number is CV659.

CV6595 – arrives into SYD at 18:00 (LUX – HKG – JFK – ORD – SYD)
CV7716 – departs SYD at 20:00 (SYD – LAX – ORD - LUX)

Afternoon all,
Cargolux 659 is currently is currently scheduled to go Chicago-Honolulu.http://flightaware.com/live/flight/CLX659
I dare say it will be an early arrival into Sydney tomorrow morning. That is a prediction not 100%.

If the aircraft hasn't even arrived in HNL yet, or crossed the American border, it's nearly impossible for it to arrive here by 11pm. Hope to see it tomorrow.

There is no "nearly impossible" about it Brad. It would take about 12-15 hours for a non-stop West Coast of America-Australia flight depending on winds and loads and thats not even accounting for the stop in HNL.

If there were afterburner engines for a 747 it would've been possible.

We can only dream.... :D;)
Seriously tho, i cannot WAIT to see a 748 in real life.
As a side point, i've always wondered why the 747-4F's had a shorter 'bubble' than the passenger versions.
Anyone know???
Brad Varney
29th October 2011, 07:46 PM
Because all the cargo goes down the bottom part, and the aircraft would just have unnecessary extra weight if it had the whole top, just the crew ect are up the top. please correct me if i'm wrong.

There's the 747-400 BCF's Brad, it's shorter because there's no need to carry passenger's thats simply it. The extend upper deck was for extra capacity in passenger config starting with the 743.

Don't forget the 747-200 SUD (stretched upper deck) variants aswell. There was also one 747-100 SUD.

Remember the whole reason for the upper deck was because the 747 was designed so it could be readily used as a cargo aircraft, with the flightdeck up top to allow a hinged nose.

There were 2 747-100BSR's (streched upper deck) variants made for JAL, for internal flights in Japan these were retrofitted options. They sacrificed fuel capacity for increased maximum payloads, I don't know if there were any 742 BSR's.
Boeing's first idea for the whole upper deck was for passengers to enjoy a lounge area while in transit, hence on the 741's there's only six windows (three either side) on the upper deck. Thinking that supersonic flight was going to be the way to go for the future they thought that 74's would be obsolete and could be easily coverted to freighters once they out lived there usefulness, not to be.
