I've always been confused by this little control tower atop Melbourne Airport's terminal 2: What is it used for? Controlling operations around the gates? And is it still in use today?

Used to be the SMCA tower (Apron control) but has not been used as such for over 20 years.

Didn't ADL have one also on the old domestic terminal?

Justin, the one on Adelaide's terminal was the actual aerodrome tower up until about 1985 until the blue one in the middle of the field became operational. Then the terminal one was decommissioned.
