Just drove past airport and noticed QF A330 sitting halfway down 34L with about 6 emergency vehicles sitting around it.....

Looks like QF20 from Manila. Was on the ground at 5.41am so well before curfew was over... any ideas?

I think aircraft can land just before curfew if they are using 34L/R, I'm probably wrong but if it was a decleared emergency, curfew or not it would have priority...

As I understand , and I could be wrong also , there a number of arrivals allowed during the curfew hours of 0500-0600 . All arrivals must use 34L , and be capable of using the declared reduced runway length and no use of of reverse thrust is allowed . You are correct , any aircraft declaring an emergency would be given priority , curfew or not .

During daylight savings, no RPT aircraft arrive prior to 0600, unless of course it's an emergency (medical or aircraft related).
The full length of the runway was active right through curfew last night.

Just to clarify - in an emergency the crew will choose the most suitable runway (considering the nature of the emergency).

Noise abatement comes second to safety :)

interesting as normally QF20 out of Manila on a Monday goes via BNE to SYD

both the QF and BNE website show the BNE diversion/leg cancelled, and so can assume a mechincal problem, including where QF wanted the plane in SYD for operational engineering reasons

According to the archives on liveatc.net it had an undercarriage problem

Incident: Qantas A333 enroute on Jan 24th 2012, hydraulic leak

By Simon Hradecky, created Tuesday, Jan 24th 2012 15:45Z, last updated Tuesday, Jan 24th 2012 15:48Z
A Qantas Airbus A330-300, registration VH-QPD performing flight QF-20 from Manila (Philippines) to Brisbane,QL (Australia) and further to Sydney,NS (Australia), was enroute entering Australian Airspace when the crew declared PAN advising of a possible hydraulic leak. The crew decided to divert to Sydney,NS (Australia) and set course directly to Sydney subsequently advising they wanted to minimize their braking at Sydney due to the hydraulic quantity. Quite some discussion ensued regarding Sydney's night curfew as the aircraft estimated to arrive at 05:50L 10 minutes prior to the end of curfew, the crew pledged to hold or extend the downwind to meet the curfew, the PAN call however released the curfew and the airport preferred to have the aircraft land earlier to complete the runway inspection and have the runway available again at 06:00L. The aircraft landed safely on Sydney's runway 16R at about 05:40L and vacated the runway via taxiway A5 about 3200 meters/10600 feet down the runway.

Isn't the A330 maintenance base in Brisbane?

I'd say more likely that they wanted the aircraft in SYD because more of the pax were for SYD than BNE, therefore less re-books. Just an assumption.

Perhaps it was seen that the time normally used in the Brisbane stopover would be enough to fix the problem in Sydney and keep the aircraft in service for its next scheduled leg?

Anyone know what time the PAN call can be heard on liveatc?

Sydney is actually the main maintenance base for the A380 A330 747 and 767 fleet. Heavy maintenance for the A330's and 767's is in BNE.

The Mascot Jetbase is referred to as Base Maintenance and the domestic and international terminals are referred to as Line Maintenance.:D

International line maintenance tended to this aircraft.:D
