This has been in the news of late, and this site has posted a video of the go-around as well...

6PR (http://www.6pr.com.au/blogs/6pr-perth-blog/video-mid-air-drama-revealed/20120124-1qeyx.html)

But a question from the pilots on the board - given how close he got to an actual landing, what would be possible reasons to go around at such a late stage? Could he have simply floated to far down the runway as opposed to crosswinds (or a combination of both)? Seems pretty critical to me, and the ATC seemed a little perplexed by the situation as well!

Also of note, in the audio of the incident, there is a mention of 'UNITY795 ', could that be the same as in this post (http://yssyforum.net/board/showpost.php?p=70069&postcount=275), or is there another callsign it is referring to?

Worked fine for me in Firefox. Both the video of the go around and the audio.

For someone like me who is not a pilot, of any level or experience that sounded like a rather stressful situation yet very professionally handled.

Cheers

Unity 795 would be Alliance Airlines I think.

By the way, the video doesn't appear to work on IE8 in Windows XP, nor in Firefox.
Hi,

This is most likely due to you not having Quicktime installed (the video is in a quicktime format).

Firefox should prompt you to install the plug-in, if not you can just go to the Apple website and download it manually.

Untiy is Alliiance.

Floating a long way down is a reason for a go-around.

Better to go around then to slam it down sideways and overshoot the runway. Also if I remember right the conditions were given as being gusty so he may have had the bad luck of getting a gust of crosswind during the flare pushing him off the runway.
