Boeing Announces Final Leg of 787 Dream Tour

EVERETT, Wash., May 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Boeing (NYSE: BA) 787 Dream Tour will draw to a close with a seventh leg of international trips. During the tour, a refurbished flight test airplane has demonstrated the Dreamliner's capabilities to more than 59,000 guests with an estimated 6,000 more to see it during the upcoming stops.

On May 23, the airplane known as ZA003 will depart Boeing Field for Sydney, Australia. Airline officials, government representatives, Boeing employees, suppliers and members of the media will tour the airplane during this leg of the tour. Below are the landing dates for each stop during leg seven.

May 24 – Sydney, Australia
May 29 – Auckland, New Zealand
May 31 – Darwin, Australia
June 1 – Tashkent, Uzbekistan
June 3 – Casablanca, Morocco

Upon completion of the tour, ZA003 will go through a scheduled maintenance period and resume its duties in the 787 flight test fleet. While certification of the baseline 787 models has completed, additional testing is being conducted on airline-specific features, product enhancements, and technologies that will be introduced on the next member of the 787 family, the 787-9.

The Dream Tour airplane is outfitted with the 787's special cabin features including a welcoming entryway, dramatically larger dimmable windows, bigger bins and dynamic LED lighting. The airplane is configured with a luxurious business-class cabin, an overhead crew rest compartment and an economy class section.

Thousands of fans have followed the progress of the Dream Tour at www.newairplane.com/787/dreamtour, which will continue to be updated throughout the seventh leg of the tour.

I'd guess the Dom-6 apron, but then again it might be squeezed in the Jet Base or Dom-4. It all depends on what else is in and what space can be made available.

I'm sure all will be revealed by someone here when details are known closer to the date. This forum typically doesn't miss a beat on stuff like this!

It's definately a 'go' James.

Departs Sydney at 8:30am Sunday for Melbourne so roughly a 9:45am-10:00am arrival into Melbourne.

The 787 then comes back to Sydney at 6:15pm so around 5:00pm departure.

Good conditions (apart from the cold wind), and plenty of people out to catch the Boeing Dreamliner ZA003 departing for Brisbane this morning. Parked in
Qantas Hanger 406 overnight, the Dreamliner taxied out via Charlie and Lima to the Alpha 6 holding point on Runway 34L. Compared to the other departures
this morning, ZA003 was up early, and looked beautiful climbing out against a clear blue sky.

Hi guys,

A beautiful morning indeed. Pity the sun was already quite high because of this livery having white at the top and dark blue at the bottom! Oh well, there is always tomorrow. :)

On a side note, that police car thing was not as bad as it looked. There's nothing like being about climb on the ladder as the 787 is taxying and spotting a police car pulling over next to you. Actually, they were quite nice and didn't ask me to go away. I told them it's a big day and all, hence the crowd, and then they said: 'So that's the new Airbus they're releasing?'. lol

1. Quite a crowd this morning.

Managed to get a shot of it flying over my place, the distinctive low growl of the Trent 1000 plus the inimitable HID light pattern gave it away. Nothing too spectacular, there's only so much one can do with a 250mm lens, no tripod and high ISO levels...that 16L approach caught me off guard too.

seems strange that they gave it 16L. But in that case I flew right over me. I noticed the strobes lights are very...robotic or possibly futuristic; i don't know how to describe it. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

I thought they looked similar to the distinctive E-jet strobes from what I just saw! :)

Thank you! Had it been a 16R arrival, it would've filled the frame, I take it it's not exactly a common occurrence for a Heavy to use 16L? The only other time I can recall seeing a Heavy flying the approach onto 16L was with a UPS MD-11 a few months ago.

This is the first Boeing airliner to use the new LED exterior lighting, making the nav and strobe lights brighter than anything else in the sky, in addition to making it a ridiculously photogenic airplane.

Looked similar to the C-17 strobe lights. I seen it fly over Arncliffe, even from a distance you can tell it something different. Possibly due to the design of the wing, the left and right nav lights seemed much more noticeable than other aircraft types.

The anti-collision lights looked like LED's, I thought. I didn't get a good enough look at the wingtip ones in action to see what they were, but I'll ask tomorrow if I get the chance and no-one has posted a definitive answer here.

I think you're right, according to this Boeing publication (http://www.boeing.com/commercial/aeromagazine/articles/qtr_4_06/AERO_Q406_article4.pdf - last page), the landing lights are HID while position lights are LED.

I thought I would wrap up the Dreamliner visit to Sydney with some images from my visit yesterday. A big thank you to Australian Aviation Magazine and
Boeing for the opportunity to inspect the aircraft, and to Owen Zupp for hosting the tour. After visiting ZA001 back in November, where the interior was
unlined and filled with computers and water tanks, it was great to see what the Dreamliner will look like in commercial operation.

The fixed flush windows and the contoured curve of the nose greatly reduce noise levels in the cockpit. Wipers park in behind the centre window post.

cabin floor and the bunks.

The cockpit has dual HUD and Flight Bags, electronic checklists, and a very clean layout. There is a lot of commonality with the B777, which has a common type rating, and conversion from the B777 only takes 5 days.

More images above.

The electrochromic window dimming takes about 90 seconds to change fully. They had to reverse the original concept of the design so that the window
was fully clear when all power was lost (sounds easier than is probably was).

The Trent 1000 is just an amazing beast - you could walk inside it. Laminar flow nacelles with chevrons at the rear, reduce aircraft noise, and fuel
consumption is 20% lower. Long range cruise speed is Mach 0.85 and GEnx engines are also available.

http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/D300-2012-05-28-156.jpg

The Dreamliner has very clean lines, and all the control surfaces are beautifully fitted to reduce drag.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/D300-2012-05-28-165.jpg

The wing is a masterpiece in itself, a high aspect design with with raked wing tips, laminar flow nacelles
and a variable camber trailing edge, all reducing drag and lowering fuel consumption. The wing tips flex
six metres.
http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/D300-2012-05-28-166.jpg

The Dreamliner really lives up to the dream up close.

Great photos Grahame - thanks for sharing them...

A bit of a technical question for those in the know... Now that the B787 is in service, a modification was made to the APU exhaust: -
Natural fuel leaks from the auxiliary power unit (APU) fueling line were supposed to drain harmlessly out the bottom of the structure as designed, though rather than do that, the fuel was pooling into the APU exhaust cone.

The result, when the APU was started back up again, this page is told, the fuel torched out of the back of the tailcone. Naturally, this was a phenomena Boeing and the FAA wanted to avoid. Sources say APU drainage evaluations have been a particular focus of flight test over the past several months.
Source: - APU drainage behind Boeing's 787 tail cone tweak (http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/flightblogger/2011/06/apu-drainage-behind-boeings-78.html)

I would've thought that this modification would have been done to the test fleet? Below is the modification I am talking about...

Hi Bernie,

Here is a close up of the APU exhaust, showing the difference in the tail cone design. They probably have not updated this on the test aircraft, as ZA003
will only do a few more test flights before it is assigned to the desert with ZA001.

Another one to the desert, already?? Is this because of the cycles/rework that have been done to the 'Test Fleet', or that no-one would want them anyway?? As sad as it is to see anything go to the desert, its particularly so for such a young (age) bird. I wonder how/what they will recycle them given the amount of composite material in them - not good for tinnies...

I did suggest they could park this one at Wollongong....not really historical, but I'm sure they'd do their best to keep it flying ;)

Grahame Hutchison
29th May 2012, 02:54 PM
The structure of the test aircraft is somewhat different to the production aircraft, so the cost to bring them up to the production equivalent would be prohibitive (and no airline would probably want one given the type of testing they do). The other option mentioned was a museum, which I guess could be a possibility.

I did offer to take it off their hands :D but would need to find a suitable hanger at Bankstown.
