Hi fellow radar spotters.

I was talking with Noel White earlier today and we were bantering around some ideas in aid of hosting an open ADS-B workshop for a day sometime soon, somewhere in Sydney.
We'd plan an informal agenda and keep it pretty relaxed. We have to come up with a suitable date, time and location and choose our favourite pizza for lunch of course.

The main idea about having this gathering would be to primarily discuss people's ADS-B set-ups, compare settings and additional plug-in programs, share charts etc. You could bring your laptop or PC and together we could round-table best practice settings across similar ADS-B receivers to ensure we're all getting the most out of each receivers functionality which in turn will greatly improve the consistency across public sharing programs like PlanePlotter, FlightRadar24 and PlaneFinder.

Personally, I think it would be a great opportunity for all sharers to learn so much more about this advancing technology from each other and to give ourselves the best opportunity to maximize each one's personal set-up and share our experiences.

We'd like to gather as many of the Radar Network Sharers as possible who are sharing feeds into and out of YSSY (which includes sharers in Canberra, Newcastle, Dubbo and Tamworth). All feed applications are to be considered; ADS-B, Mode-S, ACARS and HFDL, into all radar networks like PlanePlotter, FlightRadar24, PlaneFinder and ShipPlotter.

I'm no expert on all of the above, so we'd be looking for additional input from others who are :)

The workshop would be open for potential starters willing to gain a full understanding of exactly what is required to get started sharing a feed from their own home location with ease, along with a plan of action to ensure a successful setup.
We'd of course also invite anyone else just generally interested in the hobby willing to learn more about the technology to attend.

More planning ahead required to get this one off the ground, so let's use this space to discuss some practical ideas over the coming weeks and to see where everyone's interests lie.... food for thought none the less.

Cheers,
amsy

P.S: Genuine interest only.

Kurt, I would definitely be interested in attending, depending on the actual date (I have a couple of OS trips over the next few months).

I am very happy with my setup at present, but having only started in the past few months ADS-B wise, very keen to learn from others who have be in the game much longer. We have some great ADS-B Base Stations down the east coast providing excellent coverage, so it would be good to know how everyone is setup equipment and software wise.

Hi Grahame,

Thank you for your interest. I'm sure others will be interested in your setup too. Should be a good day if the attendance mimics the numbers registered so far.

Currently thinking of a Saturday or Sunday in November at this stage. I need to check with everyone what day best suits. Hopefully that's enough lead time.

Hi Kurt,

I will be in South Korea on Sat-Sun 17-18th November, any other weekend in November would be fine for me.

Hi, to simplify the process of finding a suitable date, I have created this doodle: http://doodle.com/4gwgzdrgzv4msva8

On that website you can enter the information at which date you are available, at which you are not or at which you can be available if there is no other possibility to organise the event.

So far I have set up slots for every Sat and Sun in November and I have split them into morning and afternoon slots. So you can also indicate when you are only available for half of the day.

You only need to enter your name (you don't have to register or provide email-addresses) and then you can select your availability for each slot.

If you want me to create more slots or set up different times, just let me know and I will change it.

The website will automatically show at which date most of the people are available.

Thanks Henning, I have updated the doodle for November.

Wouldn't mind coming along for a look and learning more about it. I seen an example of it over the spotting weekend and it looked awesome. If the process of setting up is achievable where I live, I wouldn't mind getting set up over the Xmas holidays.

I have Completed the doodle for November, hopefully The date lines up. Cheers.

Hi all,

Bob Peake is also putting together a personal presentation for the day which will cover the current Australian ADS-B network, the present and future rules for aircraft fitment with ADS-B in Australia and overseas, and some of the latest developments in the area of aircraft to aircraft applications of ADS-B.

Bob's background includes being part of the Airservices team that introduced ADS-B into the Australian ATC system, and he was for a number of years Chair of the ICAO Technical Panel that drafted the original Mode S secondary radar standards, from which ADS-B has been developed.

This should be a great addition to the day and we really appreciate Bob's interest.

Hi all,

To keep you in the loop; With increased interest, the ADS-B Workshop is still going ahead as planned and I'm currently preparing an informal agenda for the day.

Judging by Henning's 'doodle' :D ..... I think it's fairly safe to say; lock in Sunday 25th November for the Open ADS-B Workshop (http://yssyforum.net/board/showthread.php?p=77533). Put it in the calendar and keep it free.

I have to check with a couple of interstate visitors as to a suitable start time, but 9am sounds ok for now.

I am currently awaiting some responses regarding potential locations for the day, but if you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Some initial locations up for suggestion include a:
- meeting room at Sydney Airport
- meeting room at Stamford Hotel/or other Hotel at Sydney Airport
- meeting room at St George Rowing Club

We would consider a meeting room / hall / or community area as a potential location for the workshop; one that has power, suitability for a screen and data projection, tables and chairs, available parking, in Sydney metro, and one that might be free or relatively cheap for hire if required.

An elevated location could be an advantage for the set up of real-time ADS-B tracking throughout the day which would aid certain presentations.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
Cheers.

With less than two weeks until the proposed YSSY ADS-B Workshop at the Novotel Brighton Le Sands, this is just a reminder to all who have inidcated that they're attending that we're still confirmed and going ahead full-steam.

The Sunday 25th November is confirmed, the meeting space is booked and the agenda is set. I'll send out another email to all attendees early next week.

Looking forward to meeting you all.

I may have missed it earlier, but are there any plans to record the presentations or provide any material used on-line for those of us that are unable to attend?

I'm still getting my setup configured here in Alice Springs and although I think I'm close, some things are not quite coming together (such as auto updates of database tables, and the correct combination of apps to achieve this properly). If I was still living in Sydney I would definitely attend.....

Cheers,
Geoff

Thanks to all who attended today, it was great to be able to put names to faces, the content presented was useful and informative (thanks to Bob from Canberra, Phil and Scott from Tamworth, and Mike via Skype from Hawaii, the location was perfect (Panorama From The Balcony (http://www.16right.com/MessageBoard/Novotel Brighton Le Sands Panorama - Web.jpg)), and thank you Kurt for another excellent job with the organisation. Definitely worth considering another meeting at some stage.

Just want to add my thanks to Kurt for organising yesterday's event. Great to catch up with the old hands and meet the new faces.

Thanks Bob for your presentation, it filled in a lot of gaps about ADS-B and the future of this system in Australia. Looks very interesting and exciting as more and more a/c will be required to upgrade in the coming years.

Thanks also to Phil and Scott for your display, wishing you every success with your system development.

Mike's talk on static electricity had us thinking seriously of our home setup and how to protect our gear.

Overall a very informative day.

Thanks Noel and Grahame.

Just to echo your thoughts, I'd also like to thank Bob Peake, Phil Henry, Scott Pepper and Mike Scott for the fantastic presentations they prepared for the day. It really gave the day some solid structure and I'm sure we all came away much more educated about the technology and our hobby in general. I'm really grateful for their attendance also, driving from as far as Canberra and Tamworth to attend. We were also privileged to have Mike Scott dial in from Honolulu via skype to deliver his presentation. Thank you all again!

It was a picture perfect day, albeit slightly hot outside, but there was certainly great aircraft viewing and radar tracking from the top deck of the Novotel Hotel. It was lovely to meet new faces and to learn a little bit more about everyone's interests. We spent all of about 9-10 hours together sharing knowledge, thoughts and experiences with each other whilst certainly setting the foundation for future meet-ups to occur.

Thanks also to all those who attended the workshop, as without you the day wouldn't have been as successful! For those who were unfortunately unable to come at last minute, we certainly look forward to seeing you at the next one.

Here's some photos from the day. :)

Cheers,
amsy

Hi Kurt

Thanks again for organising a great day. It was wonderful to meet everyone and thanks to Bob, Scott and Phil for their presentations - sorry to miss Mike's but maybe I can catch that one later.

Thanks also for the photos - still sorting through all of mine, but there are a couple in the JP queue, (waiting for the heat haze rejection notice :) )

We were worried that the people in the adjacent unit might have called ASIO when they spotted all the antennas out on the balcony. Thankfully manage to get through the day without a knock on the door from the AFP. :D

A strong electrical storm passed overhead this evening, the first time I have decided to disconnect the ADS-B antenna to be on the safe side. There has been some amazing lightening and extended claps of thunder.
