07 takeoffs

Has there been any lately? Do they still happen? I used to see them quite a bit as a kid when they only had the two runways, but I cannot recall when I have seen the them take off from 07 last. If they did there would be some great photographic opportunities.

I don't get out to YSSY as much as some of you,or as much as I'd like,but I can't remember the last time I seen 07 used for anything :eek:

Hi Tony,

I live right under the approach path for RWY25 and I can only recall RWY07 for arr & dep 3 times. Late last year there were very strong easterly winds and very low cloud with heavy rain and 07 was used. The only heavy to depart at the time though was the Hi-Fly A340 unfortunately which was the last time that I can think of.

Jim, RWY07 is common for arrivals during offpeak periods of the day (Very early morning, around lunchtime and at night) but I have not seen it used for a couple of months at least.

When do the easterly winds usually happen? When there's a strong sea breeze more apparent during the summer months. In winter the opposite happens hence 25 especially with August being the windy month. Just wait till summer.

Utilising Rwy 07 for departures is not a mode that's particularly efficient. It can have pretty dramatic effects on the operation of the airport so it's generally only used as a last resort when wind conditions or other weather necessitates it.

As Chris said, during summer when the big nor-easters blow they'll go to it if they absolutely have to, but with a nor-easter blowing it essentially rules out Rwy 34R being used for either arrivals or departures, and it creates havoc on the international and domestic side for moving aircraft around.

I remember that day your talking about as I was at work & saw EK412 depart for AKL off 07 (Yes it was an amazing sight to see the A380 thundering away!!) and a SQ 744F, also going to AKL too!

Over the last 15 years I've been in the tower I've only worked 07 only about 6 or 8 times. It's very rare as Nigel said and only used if we really need to. Fortunately the strong easterlies needed to put us on this mode happen rarely.

DJ647 (an ATR72-500) took a curious approach path into YSSY this afternoon (check on Webtrak from about 1.36 pm). At first I thought we were on approach to 07 but then we turned north and then east and tracked along Parramatta Road and Pyrmont Bridge straight across the City and then tracked north over Garden Island the Harbour and Mosman before tracking up Middle Harbour followed by a 260 degree left turn to land on 16L.

I don't think I've ever been on an aircraft that took that route in 50 years of flying, so I'm assuming it's raher unusual. Was there a last minute runway change, a go around or is it really a standard approach that I've just managed to avoid? We seemed to stay above 6000 feet so I doubt it was a go around but I'd be interested to see if those in the know on this Board think it was unusual.

Looks like a relatively standard approach for a left circuit for 16L. You would've been tracking for the VOR and then vectors from there but looks like you've had some track shortening probably due other traffic that has gotten you flying right over the CBD. Also, with such a nice day, you would've gotten a visual approach so those sorts of tracking are normal.

07 arrivals isn't so bad, as they can still use all of the other runways. And with the sun setting, I'm sure the pilots appreciate the lack of glare out front!

07 for arrivals seems to be used mainly in the Spring and Summer periods when light south easterly winds are more common.

I remember when I was young, 07 arrivals were much much more often then there are these days. You'd have to turn up the tele or pause the phone conversation you'd be having. This was before the 3rd runway opened.

Certain houses on the 07 flight path. I know spring st in arnliffe was done. Well half of it did, the western half was done and the eastern half missed out. I guess they had to draw the line somewhere. Not sure who funded it and not sure how much of an area they covered.

07 landings still relatively frequent, particularly on weekends?

07 Arrivals are reasonably common in the warmer months with a sea breeze active however ATC prefer to nominate 34 parallel operations in busier periods as it doubles the capacity. This simply means a crosswind landing, which is preferable to the usual 07 arrival. A summertime 07 approach has a tailwind (prevailing westerly) all the way down final until just below 1000' when you hit the sea breeze and encounter turbulence and overshoot shear. Care must be taken to be sure to meet all the stable approach criteria.

I landed on 07 twice over the recent weekend. The last time I departed RWY 07 at Sydney was Jan 2007. (Incidentally I landed on RWY 09 at Melbourne earlier this year for the first time despite the fact that I have been operating regularly into that airport since 1999.)

Just saw QF64 OJJ arrive a short time ago and that is a sight I haven't seen for a long time...although for some more regular visitors,it may not be so rare.

The Singapore A380 used 07 for takeoff.... and so did the Air Tahiti A340 in spectacular underpowered A340 fashion, banking extremely early at a very low height (800feet or so?) to heading 030 with what was easily the most entertaining takeoff I've seen at Sydney for a long time.

07 ops again today but this time due to a rescue operation taking place near Cronulla which prevented aircraft from landing on the 34 parrallels. SQ222 operated by 9V-SKR and SB140 by F-OJGF were the only heavies to depart 07 though.

Nice early bank from F-OJGF though.

I Landed on 07 on Saturday on board Scoot. Very windy, could definitely feel the plane shaking about and a friarly rough landing.

Thanks for the heads up, indeed, a lot of interesting heavies off 07 that I haven't seen do so before such as DL16 and QF21. (Obviously being used all day!)
