USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/tv/2012/12/05/chuck-yeager-intervew/1695301/) has a nice little piece on Chuck Yeager, talking about breaking the sound barrier on the 14th Oct 1947. On the 15th Oct 2012 (http://edition.cnn.com/2012/10/15/us/nevada-yeager-anniversary-flight/index.html), the USAF took Chuck up in an F15, where he broke the sound barrier again, and laid down a pretty good sonic boom over Edwards Air Force Base.
Chuck lives in Grass Valley California, still flies a tail dragger, and the plates on his old pickup say it all - BELL X1.
