View Full Version : Planes on a Pole.

You used to see planes on a pole near a lot of airports, and for that matter, an historic locomotive in country towns.
I remember seeing a DH Sea Venom at Bankstown every day as I drove past on my way to work.
You don't see many these days, but at the California Science Centre in Los Angeles, they have planes on poles which would be hard to beat.

Does anyone else have photo's of Planes on Poles?

In Australia, Health and Safety has changed the use of putting planes on poles.

Both the Sea Venoms at Bankstown and Nowra nearly fell off the poles after rot (wooden Fuselages) set in.

The Spitfire that is on the pole in Perth is actually plastic/Fiberglass.

The historical significance of aircraft has cuased a large number of pole sitters to be removed, restored and placed under cover. eg: DC-2 in Albury.

Off the top of my head the pole sitters I remember are:

Sabre at Raymond Terrace NSW (removed for restoration)
Vampire at Forbes NSW
Vampire at Tammworth NSW
Vampire at Wingham NSW
Vampire at HDH Bankstown NSW
Iroquois at Nowra NSW
Firefly at Griffith NSW
Canberra at Willowbank Qld.
DC-3 at Cairns Qld. (I think it has been removed)

Hey Tim. I remember some aircraft 'guarding' the entrance to RAAF Amberley when I was a kid, can't remember if they were on poles or on concrete platforms though. Love the photo of the United jet - what type is that?? Cheers, Rowan

There's an ultralight of some description sitting next to the highway just outside Holbrook, NSW.
And after Rex retired one of their Saabs a couple of years ago (VH-OLN I think), after christmas-treeing it for all the working parts they put it onto a pole at the pilot academy in Wagga.

The first Aussie Canberra was on the gate as RAAF Amberley but I'm not sure if it has been moved into the new Museum.

Many years ago a boomerang (yes a boomerang) was on the gate of RAAF Williamtown. It has since been relocated to the RAAF Museum. All the other aircraft on the gate are now displayed within Fighterworld.

There is a Vampire (A79-321) on a pole at a shopping complex here in the Melbourne suburb of Braybrook, on the sight an old Defence force storage facility. When the facility was running back in the 80's / early 90's a Sabre Jet was on a pole not far from where the Vampire is today.

Karl the Sabre was A94-907 which I saw in July 1992 whilst visiting Freedom Furniture stores in Melbourne, I have the location as Footscray as that's what a nearby sign had on it.

There was also a Meteor on a pole at a former defence facilty in Villawood, serial A77-878. The site was cleared many years later and is now a Bunnings complex.

You've done it now. I'm going to have to add another day to my planned European trip later in the year (that's if one day is enough to see everything in the museum).

Just recovering from some knee surgery last Wednesday, so have a little time to dig out the Perth Spitfire on a pole photographs from my archive. Both
these images were taken on 23rd and 24th May 1992 respectively, outside the Air Force Association Club, in Bull Creek from memory, and not far from
Jandakot. Not too bad for 20 year old prints.

The DC-2 on a pole at Albury Airport photo must have been taken quite a while ago now, as it has sat in, or next to a hangar for a number of years now while while the Albury Council decides what to do with it, or more likely, who is going to pay to bring it back to displayable condition.

Peter Agatsiotis
12th January 2013, 07:22 PM
Yes Tim, September 1990 was my last trip to Albury ad was driving back from Melbourne.

For those who haven't read all the posts, the Mooney is at the entrance to Jandakot airport and photo taken in April 1987. Apparently Vh-REM is not it's real identity but can't recall the true ID.

Greg Hyde
14th January 2013, 12:20 PM
From memory the Mooney was to commemorate a Flying Sister/Nun/Nurse who operated from Jandakot.

Kingswood had a Canberra & Mirage (I Think) sitting on the gate.

There a DC-3 at West Wylong.

There was a DC-3 on a pole at Cairns in "Bushies" livery but I think it has also been taken down.

Does anybody remember the id of the Vampire which was displayed at Bankstown ATCC and taken out by a drunk driver ?

Long before the Iroquois was on the stick at Nowra, there used to be another aircraft there...possibly a Sea Venom? There also used to be another "plane on a pole" where Kalandar St, Kinghorne St and Albatross Rd meet. The empty pole is still there, but for the life of me I can't remember what the plane was (unless this was where the Sea Venom was?)

No F111 as a gate guard yet. The DC3 in Cains was taken down early last year or late 2011.

Greg Hyde
15th January 2013, 08:59 AM
The Nowra Sea Venom was taken down some years ago due to "rot". I think the a/c actually broke its back. It was stored out the back of the Museum for a couple of years before it was sold to some enthusiasts.

The Huey is that same a/c that was displayed in a pub carpark some years ago in southern Sydney.

The Sea Venom that was on the pole at Bankstown is actually under restoration inh the US.

Greg Hyde

What is the largest a/c on a pole in the world ?

Lancasters on poles in Canada have been removed.

Are there any Space Shuttles or B747 on poles ?

Is the DC-8 on page 1 the largest ?

Just wondering

You've done it now. I'm going to have to add another day to my planned European trip later in the year (that's if one day is enough to see everything in the museum).

There is a hell of a lot of stuff there spread between two large buildings but you can see it all in a day for sure. Some of the planes on a pole have been completely stripped inside apart from the cockpits (which are sealed with perspex so you can't get in).

Still, it's pretty awesome to be able to climb into a Concorde, TU-144, JU-52 etc and the other displays are just phenomenal as well. I'm amazed they cram so much in there. I went on a rainy day but still took a few photos if it helps tempt you more (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66122299@N07/sets/72157632522599933/)

Nigel, the Venom was in a park off Albatross Rd & Kalandar St near Nowra Cemetery.
