A Sydney-bound Qantas flight has been forced to return to Auckland Airport after a suspicious package was found on board.

The flight returned to Auckland about 9am local time (7am AEST) on Sunday and passengers were evacuated.

Qantas spokeswoman Jacqui Kempler told the New Zealand Herald flight QF142 was turned back to Auckland about 90 minutes into its journey.

The police bomb disposal squad was checking out the item, a NZ Fire Service spokesman said.

Local police could not be contacted for comment.

The aircraft is believed to be a 737-800, which can carry up to 190 passengers.

Who left the cover off? :o

The bomb squad has now stood down from its investigation, with police saying the suspicious item "turned out to be part of the interior of the aircraft that is not normally visible".
