A man has been arrested following a security scare at Sydney Airport.

The man tried to scale a fence surrounding the airport's perimeter before fleeing from police by swimming down the Cooks River.
Helicopters tracked the man until he was caught by water police.

Sydney Airport says there are no flight disruptions.

There were two helicopters hovering around the Beach spotting area as well as between 16L threshold and B10 holding point 34L at the time. One sort of looked like the Westpac helicopter even though it wasn't which was quite low near the old tower.

I was monitoring tower , they had "polair red" and "lifesaver1" on frequency as well as the ch7 chopper "SEV" which was refused clearance initially . There was also a marine vessel " marine rescue1 " in the area too .
