I have some questions as to the down time of the 787. This is purely an observation so that is why I'm throwing it out there to see if any body as some ideas. When the 787 first started I think it was on a daily mel cns mel ool mel, currently it seems to be doing just a mel dps mel or syd dps syd with the plane sitting on the ground idle for quite some time. Using flightaware and tracking VKA, it is idle for approx. 12 hours in MEL. I know they will be doing a mel akl mel soon so maybe this will make better use of the aircraft, as its isn't making money sitting on the ground. I have heard about the issues re performance on certain routes and also other issues with certain aircraft, so is it a lack of crew or other issues? any thoughts? Paul

The 78 is rolling out on markets as the 332's return to Qantas.

Prior to operating on a route, the aircraft has to be certified to do so. This is a significant task of the airline, and takes some time.

The domestic flying was simply to qualify crews on the type, and bed in the aeroplane prior to international services.

The Denpasar services has ground time during the day, regardless if it were operated by a 78 or 332. As more services are rolled out, the utilisation will increase, including all three (and further deliveries) hulls, just as the 332's do.

It is a transition period.

Is there an issue with VH-VKB?
This aircraft, according to JetStar tracker, has only been on 23 international flights.
At the moment it is returning to Melbourne after flying up into South Australia and then returning to Victoria and doing circuits near Swan Hill as JST 7998. It has been flying for nearly 3 hours.

On FlightRadar24 it looks like they made it up to the Flinders Ranges, but with a flight number like JQ7998, it was probably a training or test flight. Other JQ flights with this ID have gone to Singapore, probably for maintenance.

VKB has been out of action for a few days so i assume it was just a test flight as Grahame said.

When VKE makes it in to service, that will be four in total. Recall seeing some commentary elsewhere on numbers this year but can't recall how many in service by 31 December 2014.

Is there any visibility of the plan for which flights and when 332's will be replaced ? So far, Denpasar and Phuket - what's next ?

What is the likely timing on SYD-HNL ?

When (or will) QF replace B767's with reconfigured 332's on the same route ?

Late last year, QF in the fleet details indicated that 6 787's would be delivered to JQ by the end of FY14, 30 June 2014 as I understand it. In the list produced after Joyce's recent announcement, it indicated that only 2 787's would be delivered in the second half of FY 14, showing 4 in all, as A and B were delivered before 31 December 2013. JQ need a 4th 787 from 16 April as the new BNE/DPS and the extra 3 MEL/DPS services commence on that date. Therefore we should see VKE here by early April. F & G obviously now will not arrived until FY15 unless there is a change of mind again????

Given the diabolical serviceability record of the lemon 8 lemon with probably a clear world record holder for most unreliable aircraft it wont arrive a day late but a week or so.
A quick look at flight aware shows a late departure in over 80% of flights and numerous services saved by the A-330 after 78 cancellations.
It seems the trend continues and the complaints from ANA and JAL plus others where warranted.
Jealous eyes where looking at the 350 this week particularly those flying the lemon.
With a world full of unhappy customers Airbus should be out there in force pushing the 350 as the answer to the most unreliable aircraft in history.
JAL has walked away ANA may be about to as well and the fingers of many have been burnt by the new generation of Boeing.

Thomas Collins
7th August 2014, 07:55 PM
And how do you know the A350 won't have reliability issues either Darren?

This is very new technology. With a high level of automation and complex computer based systems. This is expected.

The B744 suffered terrible reliability issues when it first launched, and that aircraft is by far less complex than the B787...

Paul F
7th August 2014, 08:14 PM
And so did the 747 when it was launched it almost sent Boeing under.

Ian Gains
8th August 2014, 01:15 PM
Well I'm currently up in Cairns & I've been impressed with the on time reliability of China Southern's 10 787-8 flights to/from AKL that route over the top here. Not one of the flights this week has has any issues, & some of them turn around in AKL in 2 hrs.
Also, living in Melbourne, I've seen plenty of Air India & Jetstar's come & go, & most are close to their designated schedule, so I'd say that the early teething issues are well under control.

Ellis Taylor
8th August 2014, 04:00 PM
Darren, Boeing says that the dispatch rate is 98.5%. Granted they may fudge the figures a little, it seems that things are largely stable. Yes, it is not as good as the 777 or other comparable widebodies, but that will improve. Bear in mind that most operators have had to rethink their approach with this new aircraft.

To be fair, 787s being late is not always the aircraft's fault - there are a number of reasons for delays that are not always technical. And contrary to your statement JAL hasn't walked away from it by any stretch as the A350 will replace larger aircraft in the fleet. Also, ANA just firmed an order for 14 more 787-9s.

Yes, the 787 hasn't had a smooth entry into service by any stretch, but it's a little early to read the last rites just yet.

Mike W
8th August 2014, 05:53 PM
Wow, someone's a bit of a Dreamliner hater. As far as "clear world record holder for most unreliable aircraft" I'd wager that's an emotional statement rather than a fact.

I think time will prove this revolutionary aircraft will be looked back on as an industry game changer... for the better!

Evening all,

A new route for the JQ B787's with the introduction of Coolangatta-Wuhan twice weekly services starting September 29th...

Effective 29 September 2015, Jetstar Airways (JQ) will add Wuhan (WUH), China to its international network. The low cost carrier, wholly owned by QANTAS, will fly twice weekly from the Gold Coast/Coolangatta Airport to Wuhan using two-class 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. Flights are scheduled every Tuesday and Saturday.

The Travel Daily Australia (05 May 15)reports that the “new service is being delivered in partnership with the Dalian Wanda Group, a major Chinese tourism and hospitality operator which is developing a $1 billion-plus hotel complex in Surfers Paradise.” This group will sell integrated flights and holiday packages to the Gold Coast for Chinese travellers the TD reports.

“This new service opens up a direct link between Southeast Queensland and one of the largest travel markets in the world, delivering about 70,000 seats between China and the Gold Coast each year,”, David Hall, CEO Jetstar Airways.
The carrier also recently announced the addition of Townsville – Denpasar(Bali) A320 non-stop services from September.

Flights are subject to regulatory approvals.

I was under the impression that it is due to JQ not requiring the extra 787 until the start of July. Next route to switch to 787 ops is MEL-NRT from 10 July. Then MEL-SIN from 5 August, so VKK will probably arrive late July/early August. Then MEL/BNE-HNL from 14 September, so VKL will more than likely arrive in early September.

VKL is now shown on All Things 787 as a delivery date of 30 September, previously 31 August. So with MEL & BNE due to start HNL 787 services on 14 September, how is it going to happen if VKL does not get here until 30/9 ?????

Jetstar B787-8 VH-VKK Enters Service on Denpasar Extra.

Jetstar Boeing 787-8 VH-VKK entered service this morning operating an additional Melbourne – Denpasar service as JQ1035. This operated in place of yesterday’s JQ35. The aircraft then operated an additional Denpasar – Melbourne service as JQ1058 in place of yesterday’s JQ58.

Spot on, 11 confirmed deliveries, 3 deferred with no firm date or slot known and 1 cancelled out of the 15 originally slated for Jetstar. The announcement was in relation to cuts running through to FY17 made in Feb last year, so I think its a fair assumption you wont see the orders coming to fruition before then. I also think its a reasonable assumption they will have the same fate as the A380s that were deferred, in that they will eventually be cancelled.

As noted in the Investor Presentation for the FY15 results, the 3 deferred orders for JQ has now been reallocated to QF and converted to 787-9 on a one to one basis.

If you're asking what I think you're asking, Garry, then JQ skipped VKC as it was already the registration of a private aircraft.

Not sure if JQ tried to buy/trade the rego like VA did with BZG (Bretts Jet). The VH-BZG was previously allocated to two Victorian farmers Piper Warrior. The farmer reportedly swapped the registration with Virgin Blue for a couple of tickets to Canada & Alaska, while the co-owner of the Warrior was off to South Africa with the compliments of Virgin Blue.

Thanks Brian - Interesting that with the landing gears down, the main gear doors were down for the whole of the first approach but closed (as they usually should be?) for the second. Can they be controlled separately from the lowering and raising of the gear?

Also you can see an interesting looking probe (RAT?) under the fuselage near the back of the right wing root. Anyone know what that's for?

Curious. :-)

Answering one of my own questions after I googled it - yes it looks like that is the Ram Air Turbine deployed and that's what's making the turboprop sound as the plane passes the camera.

According to the web page below it's common for the RAT to be deployed for testing during initial flight testing.

Perhaps that is JQ being conservative with assets, or maybe they have one scheduled to go offline for a few weeks for a service.

from Airline route...

In August 2015’s schedule update, Jetstar Airways has revised planned Airbus A330-200 operational schedule for the month of September 2015. Planned last A330-200 International service on 24SEP15, Melbourne > Honolulu > Brisbane remains unchanged. However, this last A330-200 International service will also become the final scheduled operation, as the airline removed A330 schedule on Sydney – Melbourne route, on/after 25SEP15.

Planned schedule on 24SEP15 as follow.
