I had seen 0630 as the arrival time a few days ago, however the Sydney Airport Arrivals Board is now showing 0815 (maybe a better chance of 16R). A one and a half hour turnaround for a first flight is pushing it a bit.

From The Sydney Morning Heraly "Traveller" ...
The first flight will leave Delhi on Thursday afternoon local time, arriving at Kingsford Smith just after 8am on Friday morning. It will fly onto Melbourne, landing at about 11am.

Air India B787 AIC312 into YSSY tomorrow will be operated by VT-ANK.
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/VTANK
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/AIC312
Currently due in at 0721 - but no doubt will change enroute.
Bay 25 is where she'll park, so for those of you planning to get a water canon salute shot, your best bet might be up at the Observation Deck where they'll position just off Alpha for the entrance into INTL2. Also, subject to change!

They are only giving it a water cannon salute just in case it's on fire!

A Piece Of History
It is 22 years since Air India operated services into Sydney, the last being in January 1991, operated by B747 equipment. Melbourne
was last served by Air India in April 1981, and Perth in June 1997.
Tomorrow will see the return of Air India to Australia, the first service being operated by Boeing Dreamliner VT-ANK (http://www.airliners.net/photo/Air-India/Boeing-787-8-Dreamliner/2299111/&sid=2888b47a9dd7dfabd900f57f9d5bee2d). AI312 operates from
Delhi to Sydney, and AI311 operates Sydney to Delhi via Melbourne, four time a week, and in the opposite direction three times a week.

I think they'll give it one, like I said, the trucks will have to be on standby anyway. Morris, wasn't there a retiring Qantas capt get a send off as well last year, even ATC said it was a pretty poor effort considering they didn't get the proper arc.

I will be out there, still showing 9400km to run arriving 0815 EST.

The ARFF have no need to be on standby for it's arrival unless it declares a PAN or emergency. It's just another aircraft.
And if the Indian's don't want their aircraft to be sprayed, then it won't be sprayed. It's up to the airline whether they'll allow the aircraft to be sprayed on arrival. It's interesting to see numerous photos on the net of their B787 getting a water salute in other ports, so you never know, they might have a change of heart.

Because Australia is a big nanny state that can't let it's hair down when appropriate ??

Has anyone noticed how the main undercarriage shifts from having the rear two wheels of the four wheel bogie being closest to the ground to the front two wheels being closest to the ground after departure to enable it to be retracted. It is clearly evident in the take off video in Shayne's post. Neat.

I still wonder why SACL continues to position airside photographers for such events on the down-sun side of the aircraft... Glad it's not something I have to worry about anymore!
Kurt A
2nd September 2013, 03:01 PM
Hi Andrew,
I hear you, though in SACL's defence, it was going to be a trying effort to get a busload of media from the landing location all the way back up to the water canon salute to ensure a well-rounded covered event. When you're juggling TV Media, photographers and journos, you'll never keep everyone happy.
Without further holding up the arriving B787 on an already extended tour of the International Apron while they waited for the media to get back up the other end of the airport, it was the best position given the time of day with regards to traffic loads on the main runway, and surrounding taxiways to ensure a seamless trip back up Alpha for complete coverage rather than the hassle of coming back from the preferred Eastern side.
You'll even find that James in the air was only able to shoot from the western side also (http://australianaviation.com.au/2013/08/air-india-touches-down-in-sydney/). Sure, some things to do different next time, but as you know, no event airside is ever the same :).
Thanks all for the photo compliments, always a privilege to be out there, and another fun day had shooting a unique movement!
