Hi All,
Does anyone know or guess which B737-800 is the Rego?
According Qantas Source VXJ entered Brisbane Maint. On 16th October,
Or is it the new yet to be delivered but soon to be VH-XZJ??

QANTAS are advertising that you can follow the flight from Seattle. So XZJ would be my guess.

The aircraft is XZJ - leaving Seattle in about 10 days time. It has just been painted with the design - so no decals

Thats it?
Nice to see a different paint job, but it is very bland. They could have done so much more like the others.

Just on the photo. Was the aircraft doing RTO's? If not it was a nose wheel first landing.
I like the blue on the roof.

It looks better on the L/H side the black is much wider.

The reaction was what I expected - but I think everyone is expecting a full on colour, just like the last 3. I for one like to see something different.
I did think there was going to be a bit more colour (the blue wash doesn't show up as strongly) but the artist wanted it. They are very particular about every aspect of the design - it isn't a case of the airline telling the artist, the artist makes the decision and every aspect has strong cultural reasons behind it. It is very easy for people to comment and say 'it should have this.....' but the artist's work is very strong in Aboriginal culture.
Remember, even on a 737, the extra paint is extra weight which means money. The fact QF are still continuing these liveries in addition to the decals is a good thing. Most airlines just won't bother because of the cost. At least QF are giving us a couple of special designs each year. Jetstar still have the odd one, Rex have a few but we don't see them as much due - the only other source of special liveries in Australia is the international carriers.

Well said Sarah.

Thanks Sarah for bringing the balancing side of the story.:D
For me, it is not necesarily about liking, rather, being proud that our culture is being flown all over the place - perhaps in this case domestically as opposed to internationally.
Keep them happening !:)

Thanks Gary and Todd. At the end of the day, the artist was paying tribute to another artist who died in 2007 (Arthur Bedford). There is a story behind all art and you need to understand it before commenting on the design. It was exactly what the artist and the family wanted. You can criticise most liveries because the airline specifically designed it, this one is a lot more significant to the people it is honoring.

It has grown on me, I think one thing that could make it look better is the addition of the indigenous flag above or below the Australian flag !

Interesting the flag was placed behind the flight deck. But I was expecting more on this design.
Now Qantas on the next 737 wether new or one due for a repaint, can we please get a retro scheme! Ochre scheme would be Awesome!!

Sarah. Let's hope the story gets told properly so people who dislike the design can at least understand why it is the way it is.

Agree Todd - on one of the Frequent Flyer forums, a QF rep is trying to answer some of the questions. I hope that they do explain it coming days before it arrives.

It's probably not really worth commenting on the look until after the decals have been fitted. With that said, regardless of the meaning of the 'art', it will need to be aesthetically pleasing to the public as the design serves to market both aboriginal culture as well as the airline itself. As shallow as it may seem, the reality is that marketing relies on public acceptance and the public generally isn't that interested in understanding the rationale if their first impressions aren't very positive.

That said Ray, has there ever been someone rock up to a gate and refuse to fly because they didn't like the fancy paint job?
Dave Dale
1st November 2013, 11:03 PM
I'll fly on it, and hope that Gemini Jets releases a 1/200 scale model of it. We really can't complain about liveries. After all, passengers will see the picture, not necessarily know the story, and admire what they see. No doubt all will recognise it is the work of our indigenous Aussies. That's the best part. If Qantas wishes to impart the story behind the painting, put it in the Australian Way magazine. I'm sure they will any way.

The indigenous flag is in fact copyrighted, and unlike the national flag, cannot be used without permission and payment.

I certainly can't argue with you on that point, Nigel. The average public wouldn't really care what the aircraft looked like, nor what type of aircraft they were on for that matter.

Saw her arrive at Bay 25 and l must say I was a bit sceptical when I first saw the pictures, however upon seeing it in the flesh I can well and truly say that the photos do not do this livery justice and I was very impressed with the finished product.
