View Full Version : Qantaslink Q400s with ADS-B

Zac M
1st April 2014, 08:47 PM
Just having a search around FR24 tonight when something caught my eye, Qantaslink Dash 8-Q400 VH-QOX is now fitted with ADS-B, first of what I assume will be many turboprops fitted in the coming years!

Edit: just picked up QOI as well!

Noel White

That's interesting Zac. I logged VH-QOI this morning at 0730 as Mode-S only, not as full ADS-B (no lat & lon transmitted). Was away last week so my last log for VH-QOX was 16 March (Mode-S only).

Have a look at this subject in the FR24:-
http://forum.flightradar24.com/threads/6140-MLAT-is-now-live-on-Flightradar24?p=49528&viewfull=1#post49528
that might explain how you may have seen these two Q400s on FR24 due to the auto MLAT application.

Noel, I regularly pick up VH-QOI as Mode-S only, and have never seen any Lat/Long transmitted.

Zac M
2nd April 2014, 11:35 AM
Yep, MLAT is picking up most dash 8s in the BNE area as well as ATRs, today I have picked up Q400s QOD, F, H, I, P, R, U, V, W, X and LQB, DH8Cs SCE, SBB, I, W, TQD and QQN of Skytrans as well as TQG and all of the ATRs flying around the area , they can only be picked up above 7000ft

I was wondering if anyone had any information as to if and/when the Dash 8 200's will be retrofitted with ADS-B? I'm interested in tracking the flights to Lord Howe Island and the -200's are the only QL aircraft to fly there. I understand the drop dead date for 2017 both wondered if there was any more information on a schedule.

Thanks for any help or advice you can provide.

Max C
4th August 2014, 03:37 AM
Fair chance nothing will happen until closer to the required date.

Priority will be to install ADS-B into the Q400's first.

Given the Lord Howe Contract is up for renewal around 2016/17 QLink may not have a use for the Q200's if they don't do Lord Howe in the new contract.

Thanks for the feedback - I thought as much which is a shame as the ADS-B set-up I've cobbled together seems to work really well (better than I thought it would). I was hoping to deploy it on LH Island as an early warning that the scheduled service was about to arrive.

It's a real concern for the islanders that the -200 is the only aircraft in service with a major airline (put me right if I am not correct here) which can land on LDH very short 1006M runway. If Qantas did not renew/bid etc what would happen I wonder?

ADS-B notes
If anyone is interested I've used a USB TV tuner ($15), a home made Coaxial colinear antennae (<$10) and a Raspberry Pi computer+Wifi Dongle (~<$80) acting as a mini server on my home network. I'm able to get aircraft as far north as Tamworth and as far south as Canberra (admittedly at FL>300). I'm located in the shire near Sutherland.

Have they lengthened the runway? For all the years I operated there it was about 885m.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of smaller aircraft that could operate there, but most probably not be financially viable to do so.
Word around the traps is the 200's are to go within the next 12 months. Those aircraft would be close to end of life by now.
I suspect that somebody else might step up to the plate. There are other DHC8 operators around who might tender for the licence.

Simon Jowett
5th August 2014, 09:46 PM
..you are right Hugh ...886M. Now where did I get the idea it was 1006?!

....at the same time I believe Qantas are already signed up until 2018 or am I misreading this

http://centreforaviation.com/news/qantaslink-says-moree-armidale-and-lord-howe-island-unsuitable-for-q400-service-348424

which would see the -200's in the fleet for another 4 years at least.

Hugh Jarse

No worries, Simon.

I caught up with a few QL mates last week, and that's where I got my info from. However, based on your link they have different info :) .

QOP has been in the hangar since 09 Sept and QOR is due in on Sunday night.

With QLink announcing an extra maintenance line in TMW, we should see quite a few Dash's with ADS-B over the coming months.

Thats actually a pretty average day in terms of takeoffs and landings for a Q400, up until the last few weeks when the schedules changed the first overnighting Q400 (0610 departure) in Canberra was doing 10 flights in a day if the aircraft was kept on the same rotation all day!

Looks like QOP will ferry TMW-SYD on 24-10 then commence ops over the weekend.
QOR is due to commence ops TMW-SYD on 29-10-14.
QOF will enter the hangar in TMW on 28-10-14.

Zac M
23rd October 2014, 12:14 PM
Id expect that QOE will go in soon as well, now that they have the ability to have more than one at a time in, unless a 300 needs MX, or LQD or G come across as both those are just about due for their first heavy checks.

QOR is back online today, ADS-B is either not fitted or not working.

Max C
2nd December 2014, 07:14 AM
QOR never got the upgrade, not sure why.

QOF will be out and about later this week with ADS-B.

QOH will swap with QOF in the hangar.

QOE is due out in the next week or two, it'll also have ADS-B.

Expect the Q200/300's to only get ADS-B at the last minute depending on how many are left in the fleet in 2016/2017.

Grahame Hutchison
5th December 2014, 04:31 PM
Qantas Link Dash 8 VH-QOF is out of Tamworth today and is now operating with full ADS-B.

QOE will ferry TMW-BNE today and re-enter service tomorrow with ADS-B.

On a side not it looks like Q300 SBJ has been removed from service.

Robert.M
21st December 2014, 12:40 PM
Possibly getting it serviced ahead of the relocation of the Q300 to ADL?

Max C
21st December 2014, 02:21 PM
Doubt it. Flying doesn't start until March and SBJ has been removed from the flying roster.

The 2 Q300's going to ADL won't have any special treatment before going over. It's not a big deal to ferry to/from CBR when required.

Zac M
15th January 2015, 09:09 PM
VH-LQG is coming across from PER via ADL-CBR (QF2092) on Saturday/Sunday, at a guess (based on rotation she if flying) she should end up in TMW on Sunday night and (again a guess) should enter heavy maintenance. This should mean QOH is due out to operate the TMW-SYD flight on Monday morning with ADS-B.

The other maintenance slot in TMW currently belongs to VH-TQL!

Max C
15th January 2015, 09:24 PM
QOH has just popped up on FR24 on the ground in TMW with ADS-B fitted.

LQG will ferry PER-ADL on Sat then do RPT runs over the weekend and end up in TMW on Sunday night.
LQK will ferry ADL-PER on Sat then commence ops in WA on Sunday.

Still no plans on ADS-B fitment to the Q200/300's as it'll depend on which units are still in the fleet as the ADS-B deadline nears.

Robert.M
23rd January 2015, 07:25 PM
They had two flight plans going by my email alerts.

QantasLink #1D/VH-QOH (DH8D) has just filed a flight plan. It is scheduled to depart from Tamworth (YSTW/TMW) at 06:30AM EST Saturday heading for Sydney (YSSY/SYD) for an estimated arrival at 07:04AM EST.

QantasLink #40D/VH-QOH (DH8D) has just filed a flight plan. It is scheduled to depart from Sydney (YSSY/SYD) at 08:05AM AEDT Saturday heading for Dubbo (YSDU/DBO) for an estimated arrival at 08:38AM AEDT.

Rowan McKeever
23rd January 2015, 08:03 PM
QOH flew this morning, unsure for how long but took off around 10.15.

For a time flightaware showed LQG to operate tonight's (Friday) QLK8D and QOH to operate tomorrow morning's QLK1D. From what I can see, QOD flew QLK8D tonight and is down for QLK1D in the morning... not sure what's happened there?

Grahame Hutchison
24th January 2015, 09:33 AM
I have VH-QOH on ADSB doing YSSY-YSTW at 08:30 and YTWH-YSSY at 09:53 24/01/2015.

I also picked up one flight at 13:12 yesterday 23/01/2015, which was probable the positioning flight to YSSY.

The last previous contact was 04/12/2014 with MODE-S only.

Max C
24th January 2015, 09:54 AM
QOH did a test flight on 23/1 Ex TMW as QF6713, it then ferried to SYD as QF6715.

LQG will ferry to TMW on 24/1 as QF6711.

Robert.M
24th January 2015, 02:04 PM
I think the movements of the QLink fleet has been stuffed around with VH-SBB being out of service for the last few days. Which is why we have been seeing last minute changes.

Rowan McKeever
25th January 2015, 04:37 AM
Thanks, Grahame & Max.

Hadn't considered that, Robert, but agree it's a possibility. I had thought that LQG might've gone tech after its SYD-CBR-SYD run on Friday arvo.

Grahame Hutchison
25th January 2015, 08:14 AM
Following the morning flights on the 24/01/2015, VH-QOH did :-

YSCB-YBBN 16:39

LQD and LQJ will cross paths in ADL to/from PER on 7/2.

Rowan McKeever
5th February 2015, 08:27 AM
Does that suggest LQG will come back from TMW soon? How many aircraft can they have in the hangar simultaneously up there?

Max C
5th February 2015, 08:59 AM
2 Lines of maintenance at any one time up there. Plus 1 line in SYD.

SBJ has just come back online after 2 months in SYD.

If LQG returns soon then it probably won't have ADS-B fitted. QOR was in/out of TMW in 2 weeks and it didn't have ADS-B fitted.

Rowan McKeever
5th February 2015, 09:19 AM
Thanks, Max! Is 2 weeks long enough for what must be fairly deep maintenance (given LQG was flown all the way from PER)?

Max C
5th February 2015, 10:59 AM
Depending on which check they are going in for it could be either approximately 2 weeks or anything up to 4-5 weeks.

Q300 SCE is currently in TMW as well.

Zac M
7th February 2015, 10:23 PM
LQG is out on Thursday morning with LQD going in on Wednesday night at this point in time. I am lead to believe that SBJ was withdrawn, not in maintenance...could possibly have been used due to lack of aircraft as it only did a few flights.

Max C
11th February 2015, 10:50 PM
LQG has ADS-B fitted.

Grahame Hutchison
13th February 2015, 10:07 AM
Interesting, Flightaware shows VH-LQG having flown three sectors this morning, 13/02/2015 ...

Tamworth-Sydney
Sydney-Dubbo
Dubbo-Sydney

... however none of these flights have shown up on our two ADS-B data feeds ?

Max C
13th February 2015, 10:24 AM
LQG didn't commence ops this morning, the flight plans still had LQG as the rego although they were operated by LQD.

All going well LQG should enter service tomorrow as QF2001 TMW-SYD.

Hi Max,

From 13:12 to 13:43 for VH-QOH on 23/01/2015 from my ADS-B (http://adsb.16right.com/registration/vh-qoh) data.

VH-LQG still seems to be MODE-S (http://adsb.16right.com/registration/vh-lqg) only right up to yesterday.

half-related but Q300 TQM is now fitted with ADS-B.

Still no known plan to fit the Aus-Based Q200/300's with ADS-B.

I think there's few glitches in the FR24 data.

If you look up the aircraft in flightaware, it doesn't have ADS-B.

At this stage the only Q300's that have ADS-B are the ones going to NZ.

I think there's few glitches in the FR24 data.

If you look up the aircraft in flightaware, it doesn't have ADS-B.

Zac M
20th November 2015, 10:45 AM
VH-QOV has just departed Tamworth as QLK713D with ADS-B fitted, its position in the hanger has been taken up by VH-QOY. The second position in the hanger is currently filled by VH-TQX and I would assume that once she is back out and flying VH-LQH should be next in.

Note: Flightaware suggests QOV is BNE bound, however the track on flight aware shows a track to SYD not BNE and she has turned southbound on climb from TMW.

For those that are keeping track, current Q400s with ADS-B are:
QOD, E, F, H, P, S, T, U, V, W, X and LQQ

Max C
20th November 2015, 02:19 PM
QOV ended up in SYD to cover for a U/S aircraft.

TQX was due out of TMW today but that has been cancelled.

That leaves LQH and QOR as the only Q400's without the avionics enhancements to fit ADS-B so either one could go in next.

Zac M
20th November 2015, 04:03 PM
QOR had an mx check right in the middle of all the others but wasnt fitted, as far as i know the aircraft missing the "advanced nav" are LQH as well as LQL and M all of which are yet yo have thier first heavy checks, LQH is about due.

Max C
20th November 2015, 04:27 PM
LQL and LQM have the enhanced nav package fitted, I believe it came fitted from delivery.

The only ones without it are QOR and LQH.

Another Q400 will ferry BNE-TMW on Sunday, the Q400 that was supposed to ferry to BNE today will now arrive tomorrow afternoon.

As always, subject to change.

Next topic will be when do they start to repaint the Q400's given QOA-QOF are looking quite tired these days.

Zac M
20th November 2015, 05:17 PM
Ah...weird that QOR is the only one to go through the maintenance and not get the enhamced NAV!

As for the repaints....I hope soon....as well as QOI...not only do the stickers on that look horrendous but the actual paint is looking very worn as well.

Max C
22nd November 2015, 06:20 AM
LQH it is heading to TMW today.

Max C
10th December 2015, 12:02 PM
LQH due back to BNE tonight, it does not have ADS-B fitted.

TQE will head to TMW tonight.

There is a plan to install ADS-B in the 300's prior to 2017 but the timings aren't known.

Max C
24th December 2015, 06:16 AM
QOY should exit the hangar shortly with ADS-B.

Max C
28th December 2015, 04:01 PM
SBB is the next Q300 due into maintenance (03 Jan)

Not sure on the ADS-B timeframe but we should have a better idea after TQE exits.

Max C
27th April 2016, 08:45 AM
TQZ (Q300) will exit maintenance shortly with ADS-B fitted.

Zac M
27th April 2016, 11:01 PM
Came back into service today as QF2007 TMW-SYD, unsure if it was planned like that or not as VH-TQH operated QF2006 and that itself only exited the TMW hanger on the 23rd.

Im assuming QOA should be due for another check in the coming months, as should LQL and M?

Max C
12th May 2016, 06:59 AM
TQH now has ADS-B fitted.

SBV enters maintenance in TMW today.

Slightly off topic of Q400s with ADSB but can someone advise if all the REX Saabs are now fitted with ADSB? I have logged Sydney Saabs and those from other cities logs, including Cairns but cannot find the following:

VH-OLL; VH-ZRC; VH-ZRJ; VH-ZRK; VH-ZRZ

Many thanks for any update on these aircraft ADSB status and/or where they maybe currently based.

Max C
4th April 2017, 09:23 AM
Have you checked www.flightradar24.com ?

OLL is currently taxiing at ADL with ADS-B, for example.

You can also use their data page which will give you a history of each rego you search for.

Yes, I tracked the ones I had on Flight Radar but hadn't used their individual search facility to find specific aircraft. Thank you for introducing me to this, Max.

I have found all the REX Saabs except VH-ZLA and VH-ZRC which FR has no record of for the last week. They are possibly in maintenance. I tracked ZLA operating out of Adelaide in November last year, so it looks as though they are all fitted with ADSB except maybe ZRC which maybe having it installed at present.

Zac M
4th April 2017, 02:34 PM
ZRC has ADS-B. Im almost certain they all do. ZRC tends to spend most of its time based out of CNS where there isnt the greatest of coverage. According to FR24 (i have gold which give more in depth history) its been stuck in Hughenden since march 24.

Thanks so much for your help, Zac. I found VH-ZRC operating in Queensland from and to Cairns, Mt Isa, Townsville etc.

VH-ZLA is the only REX Saab that I cannot find on FR24. Maybe in maintenance as FR (for me) only goes back 7 days from when I have commenced searching.

Max C
11th April 2017, 12:58 PM
It's in maintenance in WGA.

Robert.M
11th April 2017, 10:39 PM
ZLA does have ADS-B (had it when I first started logging in Feb 2014), it arrived in WGA as RXA681 on the 10th of March. ZRC was fitted awhile ago (first log I have is 3 March 2014 as RXA3286)

Like Zac, I'm also certain all of the Saabs in the REX Group have ADS-B fitted, in fact some of the Australia Airline Pilot Academy's Piper Warriors have been fitted with ADS-B.

According to Flightradar VH-ZLA flew from Wagga to Sydney this morning but hasn't flown again today. Thank you everyone for your help.
