I thought they looked similar to the distinctive E-jet strobes from what I just saw! :)

Well done, James - that second one was what I was trying for too, but from a bit closer at Wrights Point!

Thank you! Had it been a 16R arrival, it would've filled the frame, I take it it's not exactly a common occurrence for a Heavy to use 16L? The only other time I can recall seeing a Heavy flying the approach onto 16L was with a UPS MD-11 a few months ago.

This is the first Boeing airliner to use the new LED exterior lighting, making the nav and strobe lights brighter than anything else in the sky, in addition to making it a ridiculously photogenic airplane.

Looked similar to the C-17 strobe lights. I seen it fly over Arncliffe, even from a distance you can tell it something different. Possibly due to the design of the wing, the left and right nav lights seemed much more noticeable than other aircraft types.

The anti-collision lights looked like LED's, I thought. I didn't get a good enough look at the wingtip ones in action to see what they were, but I'll ask tomorrow if I get the chance and no-one has posted a definitive answer here.

I think you're right, according to this Boeing publication (http://www.boeing.com/commercial/aer...6_article4.pdf - last page), the landing lights are HID while position lights are LED.

Interesting!

Quite a few interesting facts and figures in that booklet too - thanks, James!

Did it do the left circuit over the Northern beaches? what's the noise difference to an A320?

James S. 27th May 2012 09:12 PM

Lower, probably the quietest jet aircraft flying.
