Haven't seen it that far south in ages, would have got a nice view of the ice though!

On that particular day at that time that route would have offered the aicraft the best possible performance. The QF63/64 route is often dictated by weather conditions on the day.

The Antarctic A319 was all packed away for the winter at that time!

As Andrew said. It dosnt have to be a commercial flight. Anyone can fly high over Hobart. Might be some rich fella in his GV coming back from the ice for a look.
