Navajo doing missed approaches on RWY07 29/12/12

Does anyone know why/who was doing several approaches to 07 at Sydney this afternoon (29/12 approx 1300 local) in a Piper Navajo ? Very unusual for a major airport to be allowing this sort of training. My apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place. (I'm new). :o

Jayden Laing 29th December 2012 10:19 PM

Hi Peter,
It was actually a KingAir B300 which belongs to AeroPearl but operates for Air Services Australia & those missed approaches were apart of what is know as Runway calibration (I'm not too sure what it does entail exactly) but someone else I'm sure will happily explain it better for you :-)

Nigel C 30th December 2012 04:16 AM

Hi Peter,

Have a look here http://www.yssyforum.net/board/showt...?t=8901&page=2 .

It was a Beechcraft King Air 350 VH-FIY performing Instrument Landing System (ILS) testing/calibration. Basically they do a series of around 15 approaches using the localiser and glidepath and technicians on the ground and in the aircraft monitor the results and make any subtle changes if needed. The tests are done from different angles both horizontally and vertically to ensure the ILS is transmitting correctly. It's a requirement that the ILS gets flight tested for accuracy every 6 months; ground based tests are done more frequently.

Today they will do the calibration of Rwy 25 ILS if the weather permits.

Cheers

Thanks Jaiden and Nigel. The tower somehow described the aircraft doing the work as a Navajo to other aircraft approaching from the north on 16L/R. (go figure). Thanks for the explanation.

Cheers
Peter.

Just monitoring flight radar. Does anyone know what the deal is with Air Canada AC2033?

I'm assuming this was a delayed AC 33 Flight? Does anyone know why it would be delayed?

Bernie P 31st December 2012 08:13 AM

On departure this morning...

Nigel C 31st December 2012 08:30 AM

That's a longer take off roll than I would have expected if he's only just airborne by the tunnel. I thought having no pax and only going to Canberra would have been a good excuse to be airborne by no later than Lima!

Thats what we were thinking at the Mound as well!!!! And not an overly steep climb out either!!

Jayden Laing 31st December 2012 09:52 AM

Full load of fuel perhaps?

Philip Argy 31st December 2012 10:02 AM

CBR takeoff will be a challenge

He's going to have to perform a bit better than he did at SYD to get out of CBR! :)

Well if he doesn't we might have a Red Wings Tu-204 style crash...

Maybe corporate pilot mentality? If they were from a freight background it would/should have been space shuttle style!

Peter Agatsiotis 31st December 2012 02:24 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Air Force 1 damage the runway at CBR on landing/take-off during Pr Obama's visit earlier this year?

Peter Agatsiotis 31st December 2012 02:39 PM

Not quite big league but I was in the garden earlier and saw a Cessna 337 heading for Bankstown. Checked my Airnav/SBS log and it turned out to be a Cessna O-2A with a USA hexcode which Airfames org has it as N7654A . It may be equipped with spray equipment as the operator is shown as Stuttgart Mosquito Control.

The Il-76 was pre-runway extension and with Russian "Improved climb performance" takeoff procedures. :D

3,283m should be enough for a 747 to takeoff with a very good load, if not MTOW.

Must've been to force a landing in Cairns!

By my calculations, they need the trip to go no longer than 15 hours 45 minutes. It's ambitious, but they might just make it.

Mark Grima 1st January 2013 04:41 AM

You're a better man then I to be abloe to work that out at this hour!!!!

No, I'm just a shift worker who was on duty when I made that post. Happy New Year, eh?

But I'm home now, and I'm enjoying my second beer to celebrate the new year. Don't ask me to calculate anything else...!

Rowan McKeever 1st January 2013 10:12 AM

Does anyone have details of the bizjet(s) that flew SYD-CBR to meet the 744??

Stefan Perkas 1st January 2013 10:31 AM

Rowan,

According to the Coperate movements thread, both the Jetgo aircraft appeared to have been used. See the link below...

Maybe, Would the fuel be cheaper at SYD than CBR as with the economy of scale at SYD it could make supplying it cheaper to the airlines. Just a thought.

Zac M 1st January 2013 03:15 PM

It refuelled in CBR, something got stuffed up and a lot of it ended up all over the RAAF apron...

Sarah C 1st January 2013 03:24 PM

N263SG is just about to land, at 9:30 Las Vegas time. So they made in the end, good on em for trying it!

S.Greaves 1st January 2013 04:45 PM

Good on them, hope they had an enjoyable trip. Too much money? Maybe, but if they spend it on our shores supporting our aviation industry bring it on I say.

Rory Delaney 1st January 2013 08:40 PM

A6-GGP just took off from Dubai as DUB008.
