New Series for Ch4 UK
Flying to the Ends of the Earth

Some of the planet’s most extraordinary and spectacular experiences are only accessible by air. In Flying to the Ends of the Earth, a new 3-part series from Blast! Films for Channel 4, Arthur Williams (C4 Paralympics, D-Day: As it Happens, The Plane that Saved Britain) flies to some of the world’s smallest and most dangerous landing strips to find out why people want to live at the ends of the earth, and discover how tiny planes are opening up the planet’s most remote and most beautiful wildernesses. The series will encounter everything from grizzly bears and gold prospectors in Northern Canada, to the deadly race to harvest Himalayan Viagra in the remotest reaches of Nepal, to flying missionaries spreading the Word deep in the Papuan jungle.
Seven years ago, Royal Marine commando Arthur was paralysed in a car crash. An inveterate adrenaline junkie, he needed another outlet for his spirit of adventure and so taught himself to fly. Over the course of the last year, he’s experienced some of the most challenging flying in the world: navigating perilous mountain air currents in Nepal, boat planes in Canada, helicopter cattle herding in the Australian outback, and runways clinging to the side of sheer cliffs in Papua.
The result is a series full of jaw-dropping aerial footage of some of the Earth’s least-explored and most stunning landscapes. The series will also feature the people whose lives have been changed irreversibly by the coming of the plane, or who rely on aeroplanes for their entire existence. Arthur meets the family living on a Pacific island paradise 600km from the nearest city, the residents of the utopian experiment set up in the 1960s by First Nation Tlichco people who wanted to withdraw from integration with Canadian society, and sees how ‘Everest’s airport’ has brought Starbucks and ‘Yakdonalds’ to a once-remote Nepalese village.

Mighty Planes
Omega Air Tankers

We go behind the scenes as one of Omega's 707 Tankers takes part in FIREX - a three-day live fire operation over the deserts of Southern California. Its job is to refuel thirsty F/A-18 Hornets and Harrier jets participating in the manoeuvres. Nerves of steel, sharp eyes and a steady hand are essential for pilots aboard both the 707 Tanker and the receiver jets. Turbulence, wing-tip vortices, and human error - all could spell disaster in a heartbeat.

Gone to the Dogs

Dogs Might Fly

t’s a show about training dogs to be pilots. Three canine behaviour experts spend episode one visiting rescue centres, in search of 12 finalists who progress to an intensive, nine-week residential skills academy. Can the dogs walk up a slope, follow a pointed finger and find a sausage in a kennel? If they can, it’s likely they’ll be able to fly a light aircraft. Hosting this jolly excuse for a lot of pooch cuteness – and, oddly, some clanging product placement for cars – is a faintly ashamed Jamie Theakston.

Greg Hyde 1st March 2016 12:44 PM

The latest ACI S15 have aired:

Deadly Mission

On 18 September 1961, a Douglas DC-6 operated by Transair Sweden, carrying Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, crashes en route to cease-fire negotiations in Zambia during the Congo Crisis. All of the 16 passengers and crew members die in the incident.

Edge of Disaster

On 10 October 2006, Atlantic Airways Flight 670 lands at Stord Airport, but the aircraft overruns the runway and crashes after careering off a steep embankment. 4 of the 16 people on board were killed in the incident. The causes of the crash were a malfunction of the aircraft's spoilers and hydroplaning.

Deadly Delay

On 20 August 2008, Spanair Flight 5022 attempts to takeoff from Barajas Airport, but stalls immediately, banks to the right, and crashes, killing 154 people out of the 172 on board. The pilots aborted the first takeoff attempt, and the second one resulted in the crash.

Carnage in Sao Paulo

On 31 October 1996, TAM Transportes Aéreos Regionais Flight 402 crashes seconds after takeoff from São Paulo–Congonhas Airport into a heavily populated residential area, killing all 96 people on board and three on the ground. The crash was attributed to the uncommanded deployment of a faulty thrust reverser on the right engine.
