BBC Documentary "Jet Jockeys" on Youtube

Hi all

Stumbled across this old documentary on Youtube. It's very captivating and felt others will be interested if they've yet to see it. It's uploaded in 5x 10 minute parts.

IMHO, it's a well produced documentary for its time, however my only point of contention was the massive cringe factor when listening to the Sydney Air Traffic Controller shoot off the mouth against highly paid Airline Pilots

Enjoy!

great doco , thanks , having flown this route with BA a couple of times , it's good to see it from the crew's point of view , .. sounds like the Sydney ATC guy never fulfilled his dreams of becoming a pilot ,

that doco was brilliant, I loved the whole formal way that the pilots and FAs interacted and after just reading Chesley Sullenberger's book, where he took his own sangas to work for lunch, it was great to see the silver service BA dinner and breakfast for the flight crew in those days.

Was great viewing those videos Maikha. cheers for posting the links.

I just loved the way the flight engineer was wolfing down his food like there was no tomorrow. Not to mention the captain at breakfast: "Well stuff the bloody pikelets, just give me my cornflakes!":D

Brilliant find and great series! My Dad had this taped on VHS somewhere but it was incomplete (ended just after landing in Bangkok). Glad to have seen the rest, including Mr Sourpuss-Air-Traffic-Controller!

Love the Landor livery too :)

Thanks for sharing,

Dan

Great documentary, thanks for the links! Putting the pilots up in a suite must have cost quite a bit. I wonder if any airlines do that now?

Haha I love part 5 when they are in YSSY traffic control... The guy with a red Mickey Mouse t-shirt on and very highly pulled up stonewash jeans!!

Also, check out this satirical BBC comedy on YouTube about airline pilots. Seems like its losely taken off the BBC Airline documentary! Its a great laugh if you have time to see it!

Rich, I watched those videos yesterday after seeing them in the "related videos" section while re-watching the Jet Jockeys videos. I was also going to post them here, but looks like you beat me to it. Great minds think alike :p

I love it how the "captain" gets cut later on in the video (i think part 3 from memory): "Right that's it, shutup and listen to me! This is quite ridiculous, this is my aircraft, it is not going to crash ok!"

And plus, you got to love the "instant decisions" to not be personally identified :D

Also, some might also find the following quite interesting viewing. It recounts the non-stop flight record set by the 777 (Malaysia Airlines) when it entered into service.

Lynn Barton, the relief BA female First Officer on this flight, made history about 18 years after this documentary as the captain of the first BA flight into Heathrow Terminal 5 - (BA26 flying HKG - LHR in 2008).

Can't believe they made them walk down pat pong road, great doco but also a little weird.

Filmed before the internet when flying like that was still mysterious, good days.

Hi all

Forgive me if this has been posted elsewhere, though I came across this other gem on YouTube, of the same BBC "Airline" program from the early 1990s, but featuring a very detailed look at the delivery of British Airways' first Boeing 747-400.

Included are some great scenes of shooting Air-to-Air with the aircraft, the politics behind airline markets and management between the UK and US, a test flight of the aircraft with a BA Test Pilot, and a rarely scene Delivery process, where money and aircraft keys get exchanged!

I really enjoyed this video, hope others do too.

I love old well produced television documentaries about aviation such as this one, which do well to illustrate aviation to general audiences with great interest.
