Andrew,
If you click on the aircraft icon you will get a more detailed data box, in lower corner of that data box is a little aircraft icon, click on that and it will display the complete track of that aircraft.
Reset the time on Webtrack to 7:22 PM( or so) then do that, you will see it was quite clearly a missed approach.

Cheers

Was quite dramatic - saw her on finals about 3-4 miles out and WAAAYYY too high...she tried hard to hit the glideslope but with that headwind we all agreed there was no way she would make it and she was going to go around.

Next thing you know, four trails of smoke and the nose came up and around she went.

Chris, the "Static Track" shows it all, they got down to 129m just short of the 34L threshold before they executed the missed approach.

Chris Griffiths 4th January 2009 09:52 PM

Grahame.
Yes, I just replayed a couple of approaches and he was about 100m high crossing the beach at Kurnell and at the point he called it quits at 129m QF32 a few minutes later was at about 85m.

Cheeers

A340-500s in the mornings, and -600s on their evening flights. Two flights per day now.

NickN 5th January 2009 03:09 PM

My son, 5, loves the "gold plane" as he calls it. Great to see two flights a day now, and another A346 other than the Virgin Atlantic flight. Not a huge fan of the Virgin scheme.

That's a good Webtrak tip, Chris - thanks.

Here's what it looks like for anyone interested.

Awesome photos Andrew - case of right place, right time? This one with the moon is my favourite :)

Yep she is. Flew aboard this bird from Abu Dhabi to London in October. Might hang around the airport in the evening hours to see one for real at Sydney while we still get daylight when they come in.

Speaking of which - have you got a high res of the moon one i can use as my desktop andrew - i dont mind if its watermarked.

D Chan 11th January 2009 06:38 PM

that was on the same day as the EBW departure.
I was amazed by how smokey the engines were when they went around.

Jack B 11th January 2009 06:58 PM

an A340-600 is the last aircraft i'd expect to leave a smoke trail

747-400 or even a 777 yes, but not a brand new A340

It's just in the transition from descent idle to TOGA power - it was very brief.

D Chan 11th January 2009 08:18 PM

A 732 or a DC9 yes, but a 744 or a (and they're all comparitively new) 777?

take a look at a UA 744 or BA 772 departing-they leave a reasonable trail

D Chan 11th January 2009 11:12 PM

it was high when i took that shot but you're really look at where the puff of smoke was, so it was a bit lower, nevertheless it was a bit high. The go-around climb was amazing.. went up and away in no time!
