QF issues at LAX right now?
Wondering what's going on at LAX atm. Coming up on 1am local and not a single QF bird is in the air? 94 left the gate about 11pm local and taxied out for takeoff before returning to the gate. QF12 744 came in from JFK and after unloading it went to the remote stand (normally it stays put before becoming QF16). QF12 380 was only towed to TBIT at 12:15am local and is still sitting there. No sign of QF16 going anywhere soon while the 744 is out at the remote stand.
Just a bad run of tech issues across all planes perhaps? |
QF12 has departed and is currently 2 hours west of LAX with an ETA in SYD of 9:00 am local - 2 hours 40 minutes behind schedule. Neither QF94 or QF16 has departed LAX with QF16 not on the Brisbane International arrivals for tomorrow and QF15 not on tomorrow's departures. So it looks as though the Brisbane flight is not operating.

Information on QF94 due to leave LAX on Sunday 7/5/17. There is no mention of QF16 but QF1 & QF10 have also been cancelled.

Not sure what will happen with QF93 today either then. I haven't seen them move an A380 down to MEL from SYD this morning so it might be delayed / cancelled too?
Does QF16 not operate on Sunday nights out of LAX? Seems odd to leave the 747 sitting there for an extra day doesn't it? |
VH-OQK positioned from Sydney to Melbourne this morning to operate today's QF93
|
QF94D is about 2.5 hours into its flight to MEL and due to arrive there around midnight tonight. QF93 is just airborne out of MEL for LAX.
|
VH-OQG lost number 4 engine about two hours out of LAX and returned overnight, more chaos for Qantas in LAX, and no doubt elsewhere given the tight schedules.

QFA16 from LAX to BNE Diverted to Noumea, http://flightaware.com/live/flight/Q...620Z/KLAX/NWWW unsure of reason but continued to YBBN an hour or so later http://flightaware.com/live/flight/Q...145Z/NWWW/YBBN
|
QF16 went to Noumea due to the fog surrounding the Brisbane area this morning. Many diversions as well as that, most notably Air Canada into the Gold Coast
|
The delayed QF94 has just passed Norfolk Island and is due to arrive in MEL at around 22:30 local. Not sure of the registration but possibly VH-OQB which operated Saturday's QF93 from MEL to LAX and could have been turned around quickly.
Saturday's QF94 due into MEL tomorrow, Monday left LAX about 30 minutes late and looks to be the A380 that would have operated QF12 which has been cancelled according to FlightAware. Would QANTAS keep a spare A380 engine in LAX that they could use on VH-OQG? |
Confirmed that A380 VH-OQB is the inbound QF94 to MEL which is approximately 1 hour from landing.

744 VH-OEF is operating QF11 today with A380 VH-OQG still in LAX.
|
There is no spare Trent 900 engine in LAX. It is heading up on a freighter from SYD. There are engineers from SYD heading up to change the engine too.

I see OQG was still at LAX this afternoon. How long does it typically take to change an A380 engine? Assuming the replacement engine arrived a few days ago now?
|
An engine change on a A380 with an experienced crew will take around 12-14 hours. That would include post change testing as well.
The engine for OQG will only have just arrived recently in LAX. It takes some time to prepare the engine for transport as well as organising a freighter aircraft that is headed in that direction. There aren't usually spare engines sitting around ready to go either. They have to be "built up" with all the parts ready to be fitted. All of the equipment to do the engine change needs to be assembled and packed ready for transport. Hoists, stands etc. There would also be a several inspections to be carried out on the aircraft due to an inflight engine failure / shutdown. The ATSB are also interested and require information about the goings on, all these things take time. Expect to see it return to SYD on Friday afternoon sometime. |
On a slightly different theme. Does anyone know if today's QF11 operated by B744 VH-OEE returned to SYD or landed somewhere enroute to LAX. Flightaware has the aircraft landing somewhere 3 hours 40 minutes after leaving SYD but I can't find any ADSB log of it returning here.
|
I think flightaware is a little confused as it now actually has OJT as the operating acft for Wednesday's QF11, but also for Tuesday's QF11/12. FR24 has OEE and shows it going all the way through to LAX, and QF website also says Wednesday's QF11 arrived (albeit running very early!).
QF website also shows a QF6004 scheduled to depart LAX at 0600 Thursday local time, arriving back in SYD at 1340 Friday local time. I'm guessing this will be either of OQG or OEE returning to Australia, and the other will operate Wednesday's normal QF12 (or 94). |
Thanks for the information, Rowan. It will be interesting to see which aircraft operate tonight and QF6004 Friday morning out of LAX.
|
Wednesday night's QF12 from LAX is operated by B744 VH-OEE, while QF94 is A380 VH-OQE and QF16 B744 VH-OEF. QF6004 will hopefully be VH-OQG with its new engine.
|
OQG will indeed be the QF6004. OEE is doing the 11 up and the 12 back.
|
QF6004 is indeed VH-OQG and has just commenced taxi at LAX from the far west of the airport next to South Pershing Drive.
Is this where the QANTAS maintenance hangar is located? |
QF6004 is just airborne off runway 24L at LAX.

That looks like the same hangar I saw on google maps... knew the new one had been opened, but hadn't a clue what it looked like! Cheers, Greg!
|
VH-OQG arrived back in SYD just before 15:00 today.
|
No rest for the wicked! VH-OQG is operating QF1 this afternoon and is about to depart about 50 minutes late, most of which it should make up to DXB.
|
After watching "The Secret Life of the Long Haul Flight" one of the comments was that they could fit a aircraft engine in the hold.
Is that true ? |
