Trevor Sinclair 30th January 2009 05:05 PM

This is the Press Release I got today from SAC:
The first A380 flight on the Sydney-Auckland route will be made on Monday by Emirates flight EK412.

This is an important milestone as it is the first A380 flight on Sydney’s most popular international route. Last year more than 1.2 million passengers flew between Sydney and Auckland, accounting for more than 11% of Sydney Airport’s international travellers.

Sydney Airport has congratulated Emirates on its achievement in making the historic first flight of an A380 from Sydney to Auckland and the CEO of Sydney Airport, Russell Balding, welcomed the fact that this aircraft is just one of the fifty A380s that Emirates will be flying.

“The introduction of the A380 into commercial service across the Tasman is a great achievement, and I congratulate Emirates on flying the A380 on this very popular route.

“The fact that Emirates is acquiring 50 A380s means that while today’s historic flight represents a new first in aviation across the Tasman, there will be many more A380 flights from Sydney Airport in the years ahead.

“The A380 is good news for Sydney because it means quieter flights. The A380 has new-generation engines and advanced wing and landing gear design which produce less noise and air emissions than other large aircraft.

“The significance of the A380 is that it can carry more passengers than other aircraft meaning that fewer and quieter A380 flights are required to transport the same number of passengers,” Mr Balding said.

The Australian Government agency Airservices Australia has released a report showing that the A380 is between 2.3 and 6.7 decibels quieter than the 747-400 when departing Sydney Airport.
The report states that “a three decibel reduction is regarded as a halving of an aircraft’s noise energy.”

In fact, the Emirates A380 has attracted complaints that it is too quiet.

Sydney Airport has invested $120 million in upgrading aviation infrastructure including new aerobridges and strengthening the main runway to accommodate the A380.

Emirates becomes the third airline, after Singapore Airlines and Qantas, to fly the new A380 to and from Sydney Airport and the first to do so on the most important gateway into New Zealand.

Tim

Nigel C 31st January 2009 11:14 AM

If you're too loud, they probably won't allow you anywhere near the bar...

Tim Bowrey 1st February 2009 08:34 PM

Either EDB or EDD. EDA is outbound to LHR as EK1 and EDC is at JFK.

nice photos there

NickN 2nd February 2009 12:26 PM

Awesome stuff. Who will be the next carrier to bring the A380 to Sydney after these 3?

Peter Agatsiotis 2nd February 2009 02:45 PM

Hard to predict and haven't heard of any specific plans.

Looking at the production slots (up to 70) we have Korean, China Southern, Air France and Lufthansa. Rest is QF, SQ and EK.

Sarmad Al-Khozaie 2nd February 2009 03:20 PM

Etihad I Reckon will be next

Peter Agatsiotis 2nd February 2009 04:20 PM

Could be!! Originally they were going to take the 4 test aircraft from Airbus but from memory they scrapped that and ordered new ones.

Warren P. 2nd February 2009 06:21 PM

Here's one I took.

Regards,
Warren

AdamC 2nd February 2009 06:54 PM

Anyone get a picture of all three 380's of SQ, QF and EK together.

What are the odds?

Micheil Keegan 2nd February 2009 07:51 PM

I tried... shame SQ is parked nose in.

Micheil

matthew mcdonald 2nd February 2009 08:35 PM

My guess is that MAS will be the next A380 to come here.( message coming to you from Auckland)

matthew mcdonald 2nd February 2009 09:11 PM

The flight was amazing although we didnt get much free stuff to say we were on the inaugural which was dissapointing. unfortunatly we didnt see Sam Chui come down from the upper deck and we werent even aloud there after the flight even just for photos although we did have plenty of time in the flight deck. Myself. Tim and Blake will do a joint trip report from the trip. We arrive home on Friday and Tim arrives tomorrow(Tues) both on the 77L.

Matt

phil.l 2nd February 2009 09:17 PM

That would be a great shot if anyone gets it. Sydney is in the unique position of being the only current airport being served by an A380 from all airlines who currently fly it commercially.

Err what about Heathrow?

Justin L 3rd February 2009 01:25 PM

Does EK serve LHR with the A380? I thought it was only DXB-JFK and DXB-SYD-AKL. If EK do serve LHR with the A380 then I happily stand corrected. Either way it would still be a great shot of all three together.

Chris Thurtell 3rd February 2009 01:29 PM

Yep they serve LHR too

Great. Maybe if schedules fit someone can find a shot of all three at LHR too. The A380 is starting to grow on me. May have to grab a cheap fare to AKL at some stage!
