Tim Bowrey is currently at the airport and has just told me mas 122 is being cleared to land.

I saw her too (over St Clair) and also tracked on Mode-S/ADS-B; I am still getting few acars hits (last one was at 16:50).

Apparently landing gear failed to retract after depature.

They dumped fuel and have returned to Sydney.

Cheers

Adam, Do you know if that is classified as an emergency landing or not?

Adam J 23rd November 2008 04:55 PM

Matthew

Not sure if it is classified as an emergecy. Somebody else may know.

I happened to be having a lazy afternoon on the couch and i was listening to LiveATC on the net and heard it unfold.

All seemed very by the book and calm. Was quite interesting to listen to, MAS requested fuel dump, ATC directed them away from a populated area. After commencing fuel dump ATC requested nature of the problem and do they require emergency services. Negative to emergency services and when they finished fuel dump vectored straight back for landing.

Just regarding fuel dump does the fuel disolve in the air or does it literally fall to the ground like rain?

Will have some pics up a little bit later. Nothing visually wrong with its gear and ATC was just as normal which was kinda odd as it had to return.

You weren't expecting to hear panic or tension from the ATC'ers on its return, were you? I've no doubt they had been in constant contact with the radar guys while it was dumping gas and getting regular updates.

If the crew were entirely satisfied that there was no safety issue and that they could return without incident, then they probably wouldn't even declare a local standby.

Haha no chance Nigel but I was expecting something different from the regular procedures. A little concern maybe?
