Night vs daytime flying - LHR to Hong Kong

Hi All,

Sorry to be a pest about my upcoming trip (I am getting quite excited as I havent been on a long haul flight in 5 1/2 years).
My return flight from LHR departs at 9.30pm and is scheduled to land in Hong Kong at 5.30pm I think. As I am flying east against the direction of the setting sun, how much time will be spent in the daylight during flight?

I have tried to work this out myself but I cant get my head around it. I imagine that it would not be too much. I am trying to work out if it is worth me getting the window seat on my return trip or just go for the aisle for ease of getting in and out.

Thanks and I promise this will be my last questions regarding my trip....

I have just looked up on the web that the sun will set at 6.10pm so if I am not delayed I will at least get some dusk photos during landing.

Carl,

As you are departing LHR at 21:30 you are not so much flying away from the setting sun, as you be flying into the sunrise, expect a short night sector.
There should be about 8 hrs flight from sunrise somewhere over Russia till just before landing in HKG.

Cheers
Anthony

PS what time of year?

Hi Anthony,
Yep you are right. I am leaving LHR on 26th Jan (just under three weeks)

The window seat might be the option then if there is that much day flight, good photo opportunity

cheers

They might keep the blinds down for people to sleep?

Are you flying Business or Y?.

If in Y they may insist that the blinds are closed.

not even that good, I am in X:( Currently have an aisle seat in the last cabin, row 54 I think.

I never do quite understand the concept of putting blinds up for a whole flight though. After say 9 hours flight it will be well into the middle of the day over Asia (6.30am London time) so I would have thought that would have been enough time for people to have a sleep.

Having said that, I would have spent the last five days in the pubs catching up with old school mates so a good sleep is probably the best thing for me, I'll probably sleep all the way to Sydney:D

I flew with Virgin Atlantic mid last year on the day time flight from HKG arriving LHR just as it was getting dark, they kept the blinds closed the whole way.
