I think it depends on the airport and the TSA Officer conducting the additional security screening.

I got the "SSSS" treatment at KPBI last year and the TSA Officer was quite the chatty charlie.

The encounter added a whole extra 5 minutes to my journey from the check in desk to the boarding gate.
