When I first started using Photoshop I used Stefan Kuhn's guide that David posted all the time, until I knew all the required steps. It really is a great way to learn the ropes when it comes to aircraft photos.
Lee and Chris, I generally use the exposure, blacks and contrast sliders to improve the contrast, and when that doesn't have the desired effect, I then turn to curves.
