Default Newcastle visitor

Apparently Newcastle has an unscheduled visitor today....

A QANTAS 747 flight carrying 220 passengers and running low on fuel has been forced to land at a regional airport this morning.

The flight, en route from Hong Kong to Sydney, was diverted to Newcastle’s Williamtown Airport where it had to be refuelled at the RAAF base.

Airport spokesman David Nye told the ABC it was unusual to have such a large plane land in Newcastle.

"There's been a few that have come through over the years but you'd be lucky to see one more than once every two or three years," Mr Nye said.

"It parked on the RAAF base side of the airfield and has been refuelled there."

Qantas spokesman Luke Enright said half a dozen domestic and international flights were affected by this morning's torrential downpours but all had since returned to Kingsford Smith Airport in Sydney.
