Because flying south to Melbourne to then fly north again when going overseas (and the majority of 'the rest of the world' is in a generally northerly direction from Australia; hence why it's the 'Great
Southern Land') makes no sense..
In other words, Sydney's 'on the way' when going overseas from melbourne... Melbourne is not 'on the way' for people doing it the other way...
