Matthew ,
Ive been fortunate to have been to 7 Farnborough Air Shows over the years . Just to answer your questions . It is most certainly worth a visit or two during the trade days , there is nearly always an exhibit that will visit on trade days only and not public days , so don't miss the trade days . The weekends can get very crowded , but these are the days when the main flying displays take place , so it is a must . Arrive early ( read very early ) and stay till late . Ive never taken advantage of grandstand seating , so I cant comment there , however , I would imagine for the extra cost it may be a worthwhile consideration .
Do you know the RIAT ( Royal International Air Tattoo ) is taking place at RAF Fairford on 11-13 July . RAF Fairford is in Gloucestershire , about 120Km W of Farnborough . It is a must see , and you should give it your utmost to get there . You will not be disappointed at this military only display . its possibly the Worlds best military air show .
All the best ,
Dave C
