The tankers which Italy and Japan have placed orders for are straight-up conversions of 767-200ER aircraft.
The E-10 which Scott took a couple of photos of is based off the 767-400ER platform and it seems as though it is/was a replacement for the Boeing 707-based E-3 Sentry AWACS, the E-8 Joint STARS aircraft, and EC-135 ELINT aircraft.
So from that the question I have for Scott is... why do you suggest that the E-10 will soon be collecting dust out in the desert? Did the development ..and ultimately the production of the E-10 depend on the new KC-767 Advanced Tanker winning the USAF aerial refueling bid?
.... couldn't it still be built regardless of the KC-767's fate?
