I have heard from multiple sources that majority of the passengers come from Perth and a lot of frequent flyers use that MEL-PER-MEL domestic leg to get international service on a domestic leg. Not sure how true that is though.
I am also pretty sure that QF still has 3 slots at LHR, so there is a possibility that there is a SYD/MEL/PER-LHR leg in the future.
Lastly there has been many public reports from AJ that the route is very profitable.
