Sydney airport releases masterplan

September 19, 2008 - 10:44AM

By 2029, Sydney Airport is expected to handle more passengers than London's Heathrow Airport does today, but the airport insists there is no need for a second major airport for the city for at least the next two decades.

The airport today released a preliminary draft masterplan for the next 20 years of activity and development at Australia's most important aviation hub.

It estimates 78.9 million passengers will fly into and out of the airport in 2029. The airport's last long-term forecast predicted about 68 million passengers would use the facility by 2023-24.

But because of the increasing use of larger aircraft, such as the Airbus A380, which can carry more passengers, the airport believes it will be able to operate within existing government controls, such as the 80 flights per hour cap and the 11pm to 6am curfew.

The preliminary draft masterplan also envisages no new runways, no changes to existing flight paths and no alterations to current arrangements for regional services.

According to the airport's forecasts, undertaken by an independent consultant, there will be 402,000 passenger aircraft movements in 2029 - about 25,000 more flights than it predicted for 2023-24.

Despite the extra flights, quieter planes will see aircraft noise levels and noise footprints reduced compared to 2023-24 levels, it said.

Asked if there was any need for a second airport, Sydney Airport chief executive, Russell Balding, said: "What the masterplan shows, is that at least over the next 20 years Sydney Airport can cope."

The preliminary draft masterplan is open for public comment until December 16 and can be downloaded at sydneyairport.com.au.

Following a review of public submissions, the airport will submit a draft masterplan to the minister.

A spokesman for the Federal Infrastructure Minister, Anthony Albanese, said the minister could not comment on the preliminary draft masterplan.

"It's inappropriate for the minister to comment on something he will eventually have to make a decision on," the spokesman said.

Mr Albanese is expected to release a national aviation green paper in the next month, which could provide clues as to when and where the Government might locate a second airport for the city.

I couldn't see where they would fit a new runway even if one was required. I would like to see some exceptions made for the 11pm to 6am curfew however.
