Anyone know why QF94 is making a stop in Sydney today?

Only a guess, but there is low cloud in MEL at the moment and i think RWY 16 ILS has been downgraded due to works.

Strange that every other International flight has managed to get in

If there is a back log of aircraft of arriving into MEL, QF94 genrally will divert to Sydney as it does not have enough fuel to hold or circle. generally the 1st sight of bad weather they will also divert into Sydney.
Most of the the other internationals come form Asian or NZ destinations. generally would still have enough fuel to hold or circle if neccessary. Last edited by Stefan Perkas; 27th February 2011 at 12:13 PM. |

As Stefan said, QF94 due to fuel cant hold so it will always divert.

Seems very inefficient but I guess there's no real way around it

Must be VERY annoying if you were on QF94.
As Stefan has stated first sign of bad weather in YMML, it will divert without hesitation. Safety rules and I agree. QF 94 is very long haul compared to many other airlines from asian destinations into YMML, their options for hold/divert are greater. However that said, it's a tad unusual this time of the year for QF94 to divert to SYD. Certainly YMML's weather today could be considered debatable, you cant take the chance I believe. I know in the winter QF94 diversions happen quite often. Kind regards, Geoff |
