Confirmed that A380 VH-OQB is the inbound QF94 to MEL which is approximately 1 hour from landing.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did keep a spare, they are on the record stating the LAX base is proving valuable for aircraft maintenanc. Certainly in this case they were able to get things sorted with minimum delays for all.

744 VH-OEF is operating QF11 today with A380 VH-OQG still in LAX.

There is no spare Trent 900 engine in LAX. It is heading up on a freighter from SYD. There are engineers from SYD heading up to change the engine too.

I see OQG was still at LAX this afternoon. How long does it typically take to change an A380 engine? Assuming the replacement engine arrived a few days ago now?

An engine change on a A380 with an experienced crew will take around 12-14 hours. That would include post change testing as well.
The engine for OQG will only have just arrived recently in LAX. It takes some time to prepare the engine for transport as well as organising a freighter aircraft that is headed in that direction. There aren't usually spare engines sitting around ready to go either. They have to be "built up" with all the parts ready to be fitted. All of the equipment to do the engine change needs to be assembled and packed ready for transport. Hoists, stands etc. There would also be a several inspections to be carried out on the aircraft due to an inflight engine failure / shutdown. The ATSB are also interested and require information about the goings on, all these things take time. Expect to see it return to SYD on Friday afternoon sometime.

On a slightly different theme. Does anyone know if today's QF11 operated by B744 VH-OEE returned to SYD or landed somewhere enroute to LAX. Flightaware has the aircraft landing somewhere 3 hours 40 minutes after leaving SYD but I can't find any ADSB log of it returning here.

I think flightaware is a little confused as it now actually has OJT as the operating acft for Wednesday's QF11, but also for Tuesday's QF11/12. FR24 has OEE and shows it going all the way through to LAX, and QF website also says Wednesday's QF11 arrived (albeit running very early!).
QF website also shows a QF6004 scheduled to depart LAX at 0600 Thursday local time, arriving back in SYD at 1340 Friday local time. I'm guessing this will be either of OQG or OEE returning to Australia, and the other will operate Wednesday's normal QF12 (or 94). |

Thanks for the information, Rowan. It will be interesting to see which aircraft operate tonight and QF6004 Friday morning out of LAX.
