Exclamation Li battery locations

Slide 19 will probably get a bit more focus after the Boston incident!

Philip, The "Tweet" I saw this link on was highlighting Slide 19 and the location of the Lithium-Ion batteries.

There has been a second incident involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner at Boston's Logan International Airport. This time a different JAL B787 suffer a fuel leak of around 40 gallons, and the aircraft was towed back to the gate.

On Newshour it was reported that the FAA are to conduct a full review of the B787 production and parts procurement, sub assemblies and especially the electrical systems which in the 787 is very extensively used to replace flight controls that are normally hydraulically operated. It will take several months but the FAA still maintain that the aircraft is 'safe' but have had to respond to many recent incidents including the 2 JAL ones but there have been brake problems, cracks in cockpit windows, fuel leaks from engines etc.

FAA has ordered the grounding of all dreamliners until the fire issue is resolved.

Post Lithium Ion batteries are the focus

Although not explicitly mentioned by the FAA in its statement: http://www.faa.gov/news/press_releas...m?newsId=14233 the focus will be in the charging cycle for the lithium ion batteries, as they are known to overheat if over charged. The charging mechanism therefore needs to have an overcharge/heat sensing capacity to quickly cut the charging if the battery is overheating.

The fire problem is caused by the fact that a by product of combustion of the battery's components is oxygen, which of course makes it very difficult to extinguish the flames.

Is it likely the short term fix will involve using a different (ie not Li-ion) battery, say a derivative of what the 777 & other comparable aircraft have? Or could it be a procedural fix so that airlines would use a GPU, rather than an on-board battery, to start the APU?

Just thinking out loud really & wondering what others' thoughts are
