I have not heard of any delivery dates but would suggest 2021 at the earliest, if the last of the current order of six 787-9s is not fully delivered until late 2020.

The JQ 787s are thought to be heading to mainline once the A321XLRs arrive.

4 -9s with extra long range, perhaps, or is this too soon to be related to Project Sunrise?

Could a B789XLR fly from SYD - JFK? It is only an additional 941 ml or 1,514 kl than PER - LHR. If so, it could be a stop gap until the Project Sunrise aircraft are chosen, ordered and delivered and then used on thinner US routes.
If the JQ B788s go to QF are there any routes that the A321XLR wouldn't be able to operate? SYD - HNL perhaps? Maybe, they could keep a small number of B788s for this route and any other long range route. |

QANTAS schedules daily 787-9s to Santiago from 24 June, 2020.

There is also a Media release on the QANTAS site. The flight times for the 789 is the same as the current 744 flights from SCL and only 5 minutes longer from SYD. The EDTO question must have been resolved. Last edited by James Smith; 8th August 2019 at 07:08 PM. |

Now that SCL has been announced, I have worked out the number of 789's needed for the extra daily service. The 789 on SYD/HKG 117/118 will still be operating as per the QF Timetables.
BNE - 4 - ORD 1356, SFO 247 and LAX Daily MEL - 4 - SFO 1356, LAX 47 and PER/LHR Daily except QF9/10 on a Tues MEL/PER is a 332 as a 789 will be in maintenance in LAX from a SUN to Tue US time. SYD - 4 - SFO, SCL and HKG all Daily. That means that ZNL, number 12. must arrive in June 2020? I understood that the last 3 were all arriving later in 2020. Joyce must have something "up his sleeve". |

Nothing up AJs sleeve, Dennis.
There are currently 4 x 789s based in BNE. Two operate the daily QF15/16 BNE - LAX - BNE which continues to JFK as QF11/12. The third is the once per week BNE - HKG - BNE which then operates QF127/128 HKG - SYD - HKG on the other 6 days of the week. The fourth 789 operates QF55/56 BNE - LAX - BNE 3 days pw. This flight will cease when the 3 pw flights to SFO commence. Therefore, when the new US services are in place the four BNE based 789s will operate the daily QF15/16 and the three pw to SFO and four pw to ORD. Three new 789s are due for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2019. Two will be used to operate the daily QF73/74 SYD - SFO - SYD and the third will be used for MEL - HKG - MEL until 29/3/20 when the 789 will transfer to QF127/128 SYD - HKG - SYD to replace the seasonal A380 services to HKG. There will be 11 789s operating by the end of 2019. To operate daily services on QF27/28 SYD - SCL - SYD QANTAS will need at least another 789, and two if they don't juggle timings of the SFO or HKG 789 services. Otherwise they will need two 789s for SCL. In the Media Release for the 789 SFO services QANTAS didn't publish the timings of the flights, whereas in the more recent release for SCL they did. Also, QANTAS published the following in both the SFO and SCL media releases: Quote:
I guess that this is a very long winded way of saying that I agree with you Dennis, that the delivery of 789 number 12 will precede the commencement of 789 flights to SCL. The only other option that I can see is if the 789 is taken off the HKG service. Then there are aircraft numbers 13 & 14 which I presume will operate to JNB. Not sure about HND services but I heard that QANTAS was trying to upgrade them to A380s if allowed by the airport. Also, that QANTAS maybe going to order another four 789s to be announced on 22 August, 2019. |

Looking at the QANTAS SYD - SFO - SYD flights in July, 2020 the departure time for QF73 has been put back from today's 17:40 to 19:55 with effect from 29/3/20. This will enable QANTAS to operate to SCL with just the one additional 789, which it is presumed will be 12th aircraft that will be delivered in late May, early June 2020 as services commence on Wednesday 24/6/20. The last 744 service departs SYD on Tuesday 23/6/20 to SCL arriving back the next afternoon. The routing will be SYD - SFO - SYD - SCL - SYD - SFO etc over a four day cycle. The 789 operating to SFO on Monday will return to SYD on Wednesday morning, operate to SCL at 12:35 and return to SYD at 17:50 on Thursday in time to operate to SFO at 19:55. In addition, the HKG 789 services on QF127/128 will continue through mid June, 2020. Last edited by James Smith; 13th August 2019 at 12:46 PM. |
