I can't remember which Pope it was, but one of them also flew on a Qantas 747 SP - VH-EAB from memory. Not overly sure whether it was coming in to Australia or leaving - suspect it was leaving. I have a vague memory of some protocol whereby a carrier belonging to the nation from whence the Pope is leaving provides the aircraft...but I reiterate, that is a vague memory.

Steve is correct.
The "Flag carrier" of the last visited country flies the Pope to the next destination, I haven't been following the details of his visit, where is he coming from? Is it direct from Italy or via a 3rd country, If it is from Italy then Alitalia (if it still exists by the time of his visit) will be providing the aircraft to Australia, and QANTAS (If it can provide a serviceable aircraft) will provide the aircraft to his next destination. |

come from Rome
The pope is coming directly from Rome according to the itinerary on the Holy See web site.

as per a previous post, an Alitalia 777 is expected to bring the Pope to Australia, with the intention to fly it nonstop.
