I've seen it with my own eyes so now I believe it, finally we have a 787

I love the way the bird in the background of this shot shows the wing flex and evolution of nature's wing, with our best attempt at gaining aerodynamic efficiency.

(Unfortunately my camera autofocusing wasn't quite right in this)

No doubt some familiar names in one vehicle, but you probably wouldn't know the people in the other one.

Now, when's the next inaugural event? I'll have to check my roster to see what I'm doing for that one!

Has anyone noticed how the main undercarriage shifts from having the rear two wheels of the four wheel bogie being closest to the ground to the front two wheels being closest to the ground after departure to enable it to be retracted. It is clearly evident in the take off video in Shayne's post. Neat.

I still wonder why SACL continues to position airside photographers for such events on the down-sun side of the aircraft... Glad it's not something I have to worry about anymore!

Hi Andrew,

I hear you, though in SACL's defence, it was going to be a trying effort to get a busload of media from the landing location all the way back up to the water canon salute to ensure a well-rounded covered event. When you're juggling TV Media, photographers and journos, you'll never keep everyone happy.

Without further holding up the arriving B787 on an already extended tour of the International Apron while they waited for the media to get back up the other end of the airport, it was the best position given the time of day with regards to traffic loads on the main runway, and surrounding taxiways to ensure a seamless trip back up Alpha for complete coverage rather than the hassle of coming back from the preferred Eastern side.

You'll even find that James in the air was only able to shoot from the western side also. Sure, some things to do different next time, but as you know, no event airside is ever the same .

Thanks all for the photo compliments, always a privilege to be out there, and another fun day had shooting a unique movement!

Simple solution Kurt - all media events/new aircraft to only be permitted between 1400-1800
