Default Coming or going?

DC-3 VH-PWM at Sydney in November 1982 - Operated by Rebel Air and departing here from Runway 25.

Given piano keys, flaps and aircraft attitude, could I suggest that this is VH-PWM arriving rather than departing?

Definitely a takeoff Philip, I remember taking the shot from where the Virgin Blue cargo hanger is today, and have a sequence of images from holding in taxiway GOLF 4 to lifting off down towards the intersection. The brick tower in the background is part of the sewerage works, and if you have a look on Goodle Earth you will notice three sets of double white runway markers, well down the runway from the piano keys. My estimation from GE would place the aircraft aboyut 300mtr down the runway from the 25 threshold.

Can you believe the GA security fence along Ross Smith Avenue in the photograph of Navajo Panther N7XB. I can remember there was a garden style gate to gain access to the aircraft from the footpath.

I can't argue with the photgrapher! Although the props look feathered too...

The a/c has a fascinating history: http://www.aussieairliners.org/dc-3/vh-ewb/vhewb.html

GA 'security' fence certainly brings back fond memories.

Props are at Fine, and the flaps appear to be at 1/4, 1/2. You use the flaps to get off the deck quicker in the dak.

Grahame,
Just a note on the Channel 7 Jetranger with floats. I was working for Seven Sydney at the time and our machine, also a Jetranger 206B III (VH-ATS) had floats installed for the Sydney-Hobart Race in 1983. We chased the yatchs as far as Victoria/Bass Striat and Melbourne chopper (VH-ATD) took over.

I have some B&W photos of it... somewhere... will post as soon as I find them.

As a cameraman, the floats were an absolute pain. You had to stretch the harness to its limits to sit out on the floats and the pilots (Frank is still there) hated it as it off balanced too much. The floats were taken off asap after the race and I don't think we saw them again. VH-SEV arrived 18 months later... and no floats!

This is the only shot I can find of VH-ATS... me at the con, pilot behind the camera

Just found this historic photograph from Bankstown in May 1991, Gabby Kennard's Piper Saratoga PA32 R301 VH-GKF "Slender You Lady"
in which she completed a solo around the world flight, the first by an Australian woman. Gabby's solo around the world flight begain at
Bankstown at 0855 on 3 August 1989 and took 99 days to complete, not the 42 she had planned. I checked the Australian register and
the Saratoga is still on there (presumably the same aircraft). Video available at http://www.gabykennard.biz/soloFlight.html
