One dead, one hurt in helicopter crash
August 23, 2008 04:24pm

ONE man is dead and another is injured after a helicopter hit a power line and crashed south-east of Katherine in the Northern Territory, emergency services say.

The helicopter crashed shortly after taking off from the Mataranka Rodeo Grounds just after midday (CST) today.

One man was found dead by emergency services and another was extracted from the crash site suffering arm injuries and shock.

The injured man will be treated at the local clinic before being transferred by St John Ambulance to Katherine Hospital.

A small grass fire ignited at the crash scene in the rodeo grounds has been put out and a fuel leak from the aircraft was being managed by fire and emergency workers.

A 500-metre exclusion zone has been established around the crash site, and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority will begin investigations tomorrow.

The Mataranka Rodeo scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled.
