Emirates today (28JAN16) has announced new service enhancement to New Zealand, where it’ll be launching nonstop Dubai – Auckland service. From 01MAR16, Boeing 777-200LR aircraft will be operating this route on daily basis.

EK448 DXB1005 – 1100+1AKL 77L D
EK449 AKL2130 – 0545+1DXB 77L D

This route will become the world’s longest nonstop flight, at 8810 miles, the flying time from Auckland is 17hrs 15mins. It’s planned service to Panama City is 8580 miles.
I have an upcoming 14 hour flight in March I am not keen about, 17 hours flying and no bar, no thanks!

I have not heard of any changes to the Sydney service, their yields have been low on the route across the ditch but I think it will still make more sense than parking in Sydney for them. Sure going to be a sea of Emirates tails at AKL every lunchtime.

Rgr. Copy. I much prefer flying over on the A380 than those other zip start miniature things...

A380 A6-EON operated the inaugural EK448/449 rotation. B777-200LR A6-EWF is the first of its type to operate this service... pushing back as I type.

Qatar Airways CEO, Akbar Al Baker spoke on this at the Media Conference on Thursday morning, saying "we already stated that we would fly direct to Auckland, and you already saw the reaction from my competition, that they immediately put a flight directly there. We are not going to chicken out, we will definitely fly to Auckland, but as a respect to Emirates, as they have already launched a direct flight, we will wait until the end of the year before we will operate. We were originally supposed to operate in June, but we are now delaying it until the end of the year, but we will certainly go direct from our hub in Doha to Auckland".

I guess this would then be the "World's Longest Flight".

Al Baker for a number of years has given "talk is cheap" the prominence it does not deserve.
