Darwin Aviation Museum
Hi all,
Today I visited the Australian Aviation Heritage Museum in Darwin. http://www.darwinsairwar.com.au/ I had never heard of it before so didn't know what to expect, however it was truly amazing. They have a B52, a Sabre, Mirages, F111 to name a few. Its also essentially hands on. Attached are some images, excuse the quality they were taken on my phone. When in Darwin, it is well worth the $14.00 admission fee. Cheers M

Thanks for the pics Mark. We visited there 7 or 8 years ago and found it surprisingly great - even my wife seemed to enjoy it. My then 3yo son all but memorised the catalogue afterwards - it was his favourite bedtime story, and he still likes his pic in the B52 bomb bay!

I have been there quite a few times, and think they have done a great job on the upgrades at the front (shop/entry) It truly is a hidden gem and worth every cent when your in Darwin

I visited it once a few years ago, and was well worth it then. Its also interesting to see the remnants of WW2 airfields along the main highway south/north.

In the early 60's the area where the Museum is was littered with cowlings for radial engine aircraft and varies airframe bits. The ex WWII airfields alongside the highway and some inland one [some were hard to get to as no maintained roads lead to them]were great for fossiking for bits and pieces.

Well worth a visit.
Before Tindal was opened the WW2 fields were checked on a regular basis in case a Mirage needed somewhere to land away from Darwin. Also is the Mirage wreck (as recovered) still outside the museum ? |

Yes, it's still there as of Feb last year when I visited. Fantastic museum. A great collection including an East Timorese Dove which has an interesting story of escape then restoration.

Greg, it was absolutely chucking it down when we were there, so didn't have a good look outside at all, but as we were driving out, yes I'm pretty sure I saw a wrecked aircraft.
Certainly couldn't recognise it as a mirage though...partly cause the wipers on the car couldn't give us a clear look! Cheers M
