Default Runway 07/25 Closed

Hey Guys,

I was playing around with google maps and when looking across runway 07/25 at SYD, there is a big cross at the threshold.

When was the runway closed and why.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before.

Pretty sure the cross means, 'don't land here, land down there a bit further'!

The light coloured concrete area is basically an overrun and line up area I think... Nigel?

Interesting also that the touch down markers appear blacked out on 25/07???

Nope, a cross means runway/taxiway closed and unavailable. A series of arrows would lead to a displaced threshold if one was in place. Judging by the look of the 07 threshold end I'd say this was during construction of the RESA in that location, during which time the runway was temporarily closed.

Not quite Andrew. The X without a displaced threshold means that entire runway is unserviceable. If that cross was next to the windsock then whole aerodrome is unserviceable.

Just beaten by Rowan.

Rowan is right about it being during RESA construction. Looking at Google Maps the old Twy Bravo-4 is still there, so the time would be about right if I remember correctly.

I think the project lasted 18 months beginning from October 2008 up until late March 2010.

I remember it was completed right around when the ridiculous noisy jet ban was announced.
